Trainer Jonjo O'Neill is a man with plenty of Grand National experience - both as a rider and a winning trainer and he could enjoy more Aintree success with Crebilly.

The talented seven-year-old did well at the Cheltenham Festival, finishing second to Shakem Up'Arry - the horse owned by former football manager Harry Redknapp - despite some issues over his jumping.

He has plenty of potential and the step up in distance could also help him.

Among others with chances are Twig, The King of Ryhope and Cruz Control.

  3. Who's number one for Robinson?published at 14:21 British Summer Time 13 April

    Paul Robinson

Nobody better to occupy the number one spot than a former England goalkeeper.

Paul Robinson is part of the BBC Radio 5 Live team, with coverage from Aintree amid commentaries and updates.

The former Blackburn and Spurs stopper told me: "It's my first time at the National, but I've always been interested in horse racing.

"I love the preparation of the horse for a specific race. You are training an athlete and there's a lot of science behind the sport, which I find fascinating.

"The Grand National was great when you played away on the Sunday - you'd have a sweepstake on the coach which always added that little bit of fun to it."

On who might win the Grand National: "I like Vanillier and Mr Incredible and think they will both run well."

And the Premier League? "I think Man City will do it and are slight favourites in my opinion as they've been here before."

  4. Starr power - The 1994 Nationalpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 13 April

Comedian, impressionist, singer and actor Freddie Starr was a regular face on television in the 1980s and 1990s and in 1994 his horse Miinnehoma won the Grand National.

Ridden by Richard Dunwoody, who had previously won in 1986 on West Tip, and trained by Martin Pipe, Starr’s Liverpool roots meant that the horse was popular in the betting market, going off at 16-1.

Although the horse made a mistake at Bechers on the second circuit, they were well placed throughout and challenged late on finishing ahead of Just So, with Moorcroft Boy, who broke a blood vessel late on when in the lead, third.

Miinnehoma competed in the 1995 race but failed to finish and he went on to spend his retirement in Pipe’s yard before he died in July 2012 aged 29.

Landed Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2021 for trainer, who went on to win National with stablemate Minella Times a month later as Rachael Blackmore became first female jockey to win the race. Fourth last time out in Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham in December. Question is how much of old ability remains? Only two horses have done the Gold Cup-National double, with L'Escargot the last in 1975.

  6. 'It's softer than ideal'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 13 April

    Grand National (16:00 BST)

Minella Indo trainer Henry de Bromhead, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was amazing having Rachael Blackmore as the first lady to win the National. Minella Indo was meant to run in the Cross Country at Cheltenham but that was sadly cancelled. It's softer than ideal for him but I think he should really enjoy it. He's as good as we've ever had him so fingers crossed."

We've got a few hours yet until the famous old race gets under way.

It's 185 years since the race was first run, with nine-year-old Lottery taking the glory on that fateful 1839 afternoon.

Who will be on the top step today?

There’s a huge crowd at Aintree this afternoon and Brighterdaysahead was roared home to victory by many of the racegoers.

It’s been dry throughout the day but windy - the sort of weather that plays havoc with a carefully-crafted coiffure.

Trainer of Kitty's Light Christian Williams, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about bidding to provide the first Welsh-trained victor since Kirkland in 1905: "We've [Wales] had plenty of placed horses in it. Hopefully we put it right today. He's [Kitty's Light] a wonderful horse and did something very special last year and won the Scottish National. He did all that last year on fast ground so we're a little worried he wants that. We basically train on a beach and it seems to work. It doesn't cost as much to put in. We've been training there five years and won a lot, it seems to work."

On daughter Betsy battling leukaemia: "We've got light at the end of the tunnel with our daughter but we see families without light. They really enjoy following him. We've had Kitty since he was a yearling. He's part of the family. We're very lucky to raise the awareness with what's happened to Betsy."

Kitty's Light trainer Christian Williams talks about the treatment his young daughter Betsy is receiving for leukaemia.

The six-year-old was diagnosed in early 2023 and Kitty's Light's victories in the Scottish National and the Bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown brought some much-needed joy into his family base in Ogmore-by-Sea.

Now the hope is that Jack Tudor can ride 14-1 chance Kitty's Light to Grand National success and continue to deliver brighter moments in a difficult time, and become the first Welsh-trained horse to lift the Aintree prize since Kirkland in 1905.

Williams also talks about how the racing community has rallied around the family, and the treatment his daughter is undergoing.

Winning jockey Jack Kennedy, speaking to ITV after Brighterdaysahead's victory: "She showed there what we've always thought of her. I really wanted to hold on to her for longer but couldn't - she's a really talented mare.

"it was a bit of a mess of a race at Cheltenham and we were disappointed she didn't win there because she is better than that and it is good to show that here."
