Sam Bird's Envision Virgin Racing team radio: "Ok, take a breath. I'll just remind you both of the Mahindra's are out, so this is a points haul, a points haul."

The translation of that team radio is: Don't do anything stupid because you could be leading the points by the end of the day!

Keith Massey: Getting into this electric motor racing. Great skill by the drivers on a tight circuit and love the siren sounds from the power chain. Incredible acceleration! Great coverage @BBCSport

Richard Hornby: If they all go to attack mode, Mortara is going to be a sitting duck.

Rob Spedding: Today’s @FIAFormulaE #HongKongePrix demonstrates every element of a top level international racing series. Great cars, same chassis, different surfaces and grip levels, varying conditions, attack mode and unforgiving walls to punish the slightest mistake. #FormulaE #BBCFormulaE

    • Buemi
    • Sims
    • Nasr
    • Wehrlein
    • D'Ambrosio

  5. Is it best to lead or chase?published at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2019

Formula 1 fans will know it's advantageous to be leading since drivers have the clean air in front of them. In F1, drivers who are following in second they receive dirty air from the car in front which affects the amount downforce they have and causes their tyres to degrade quicker.

However, in Formula E, that scenario is flipped. The cars can race closer together, and since the cars are powered electronically, there isn't as much dirty air as there is from a fuel powered engine.

Formula E cars can draft one another (like in cycling) to save energy. On this occasion Lotterer is using more energy as the race leader, whereas Bird is following closely in second, saving some of his energy.

  6. 'Smart racing'published at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2019

Smart racing from Sam Bird. He thought: "I'm not going to lose position and take myself out. I'll get to [Lotterer] later on."

The drivers are beginning to use their first lot of attack mode. Which gives them 25kw of extra energy to deploy.

However, you may notice Andre Lotterer's battery power is about 4% lower than Sam Bird's behind in second.

  8. Will Lotterer make a mistake?published at 08:43 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2019

    Dario Franchitti
    Four time IndyCar Series champion

This is one of those points were if you're Andre Lotterer you want to push a little bit hard but if you're Sam Bird, you'll need to wait to see if they guy in front will make a mistake.

  10. 'Bird needs to push'published at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2019

    Dario Franchitti
    Four time IndyCar Series champion

A problem for Sam Bird is he's got to push even harder to close that second gap of race leader Lotterer at the front.

Mike Wood: Over 40 overtakes in first lap, probably the same in a whole season of formula 1. FormulaE was ok first year, but this year it's awesome, big thumbs up to BBC for the air time.

Daniel Eckerlsy: It you’re new to FE and want to know if it’s always this mental...Yes. Yes it is

Envision Virgin team Principal Sylvain Filippi, speaking on Sam Bird making up five places in that first section of the race, says: "It was an incredible start - we told him to take it easy at the start because the track is wet, and he didn't.

"At the beginning it's about space and if you're in the right place at the right time then it's a long way to go. A red flag at the beginning is annoying but that's what we have."
