It was a game for the defences, with veteran Kiwi defender Casey Kopua and Courtney Bruce playing at goal keeper at the other end producing intercept after intercept.
Silver Fern Maria Folau had the chance to level the scores with a second on the clock, but her shot agonisingly rolled around the rim and bounced away, handing Australia a 50-49 victory.
The result means New Zealand plays the winner of England v South Africa (20:00 BST)
Incidentally, even if Folau's shot had dropped, New Zealand would still have finished second in the group, on goal percentage.
Scotland will have to play for an 11th place finish after a tight 43-43 draw with Trinidad & Tobago.

Lynsey Gallagher's penalty shot on the buzzer was enough to salvage a draw for the side.
Scotland now face Barbabos on Saturday (09:00 BST) in the 11th-place play-off.
