  2. 'To be down and to still come out on top feels really nice'published at 10:01 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

    BBC Sport

England head coach Jess Thirlby speaking to BBC TV on a historic first World Cup win over Australia: "It is a masively important moment for this group in particular.

"It adds to our confidence bank, but we know that we've got two games to come and it means nothing if we can't follow it up. But for today it is important to allow the players to celebrate that.

On how big the win really is:

"I'm not going to lie, it does feel nice. I think the fact that we were eight goals down, to then be pushed in the last 15 minutes and still come out on top...

"I don't think you can underestimate what that tells me about where the group are at mentally. That is the scary thing and that is what we need to focus on as we look forward to the semi finals.

    On the in-game tactical changes:

"As a coaching team we were really confident in the areas where we might have the edge on those slides, particularly in quarters and not just the breaks.

"To be able to unleash for me for short periods of time havign seen how the game plays out, with the most respect to Mentor and Guscoth really wearing the team down.

"Both teams know each other so well, it is just what you do with that knowledge.

  3. What else is happening today?published at 10:00 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

Well, we have more exciting netball with England yet to find out their semi-final opponents and by the end of today we will know.

Jamaica face New Zealand in a crucial match at the top of Pool G and that is about to get underway in here so what are you waiting for get over there now.

South Africa then face Uganda later but their semi-final hopes could be over by then if New Zealand draw or win.

I suppose questions now will be around whether Jess Thirlby sticks with that seven who won the game or the seven that she put out in the first place.

If anyone was in any doubt about Thirlby trusting the 12 she brought, I think we can put those to bed. Those subs came on and had an impact just as she has suggested throughout the tournament.

    A full team performance.

  5. 'Everyone who came on had a huge impact'published at 09:53 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

    FT: Australia 55-56 England

    BBC Sport

England centre Imogen Allison speaking to BBC TV:

"The team are feeling pretty good at the moment and it was a great performance from everyone.

"Every win is a confidence boost for us, and it is something that keeps us going day after day. So yes getting one over Australia is a good one.

"I don't have a preference [of position], because my coach is stood right next to me! I really enjoy them both, they are both very different, but it was good to get to play out at wing defence at the end there.

"We've had some games where we've been able to throw out different combinations, and that is why we were able to go and do it out there [today]. All the girls that came on had a huge impact.

"I think I'm just enjoying every moment, I'm just loving it and it is just a great experience."

Well, I'm still buzzing after that tense finale... and that's only a prelim match!

Imogen Allison and Jess Thirlby are currently speaking to BBC Two and they both seem really quite calm and chilled.

    HOW?

Eddie: What a fantastic game, showing the quality of netball. Great win for England

Adam: What a fantastic result for England!!! Just need to strengthen up a bit more in defence I think. Shooters were incredible

Skye: WHAT A GAME! England you had me on the edge of my seat and with that win, I woke up my partner with the celebrating as it was such a close game throughout!!!

  9. 'Pitman worked her magic'published at 09:44 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

    FT: Australia 55-56 England

    Ama Agbeze
Former England captain on BBC TV

I expected Pitman to come on earlier in the game, at the start of the second quarter.

But when she was injected into the game she worked her magic.

That is potentially something that Jess Thirlby will look at [going forwards].

But it is a long game, and having those impact players is really valuable, and makes the opposition think.

Although this match didn't mean a great deal when it comes to semi-final qualification - both England and Australia have already qualified for the semi-finals - it means England will finish top of Pool F and therefore probably avoid a semi-final against the in-form Jamaica.

They will likely face either New Zealand, South Africa or Jamaica but it all depends on what else happens today.

Not getting too carried away but we could potentially have a final which does not include Australia or New Zealand for the first time ever.

  11. 'I've got goosebumps!'published at 09:41 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

    FT: Australia 55 - 56 England

    Jodie Gibson
England defender speaking on BBC TV

And breathe! I actually have goosebumps I think.

    That game was incredible!

The half time change of Clarke was a game changer. The defensive circle between Fadoju and Williams came alive.

Also bringing on Pitman when she did, brilliant changes that really made the difference.

Chelsea Pitman is a magician with the ball, she connects so well with Housby and finds Cardwell so well in the circle. She made the difference in the game for me.

Many England fans will have been unsure of those changes at half time but what an impact they had.

Chelsea Pitman injected some creativity and pace, Funmi Fadoju bringing the flair and Fran Williams with some crucial intercepts to keep that cushion.

    Superb.

Less than a minute to go and England are taking it to goal.

Eleanor Cardwell gets the goal but there's time still for Australia to draw back level.

  17. 'Great work rate from Weston'published at 09:34 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

    Pamela Cookey
    Former England shooter

We said it when Weston came on that she was going to be player for player on Housby, that she was going to get tight.

But what work rate [she has shown] since she has come on.

No! Imogen Allison who has been so good this tournament just passes it straight to Jo Weston after Funmi Fadoju worked hard to win the ball back.

Four interceptions on the bounce for the Diamonds.

You can't blink with this one. We're back level with less than two minutes on the clock.

  20. 'Constant ebb and flow of momentum'published at 09:33 British Summer Time 3 August 2023

    Madison Browne
Australia mid-court speaking on BBC TV

Momentum shifts have just ebbed and flowed this entire match.

Even as the lead changes, it is interesting how both of these sides have played as the leaders and as the pressure has been on them [when behind].
