  1. 'Housby already taking control'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Karen Greig
Manchester Thunder Head Coach on BBC Two

Helen Housby has already taken this game by the scruff of the neck, and is really taking control of that attacking end.

We need to start seeing a little more variety around the circle edge of first time touch into the circle or holding on and shifting the defenders around.

    Q2: England 16-17 Australia

Bit frenetic around England's circle edge and Jo Weston gets the tip to give Australia the chance to nudge ahead.

Just one shot has been missed between the four shooters today and that was Steph Wood. Impressive stuff.

  3. 'Masterstroke to bring in Williams'published at 17:31 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Serena Kersten
Commonwealth gold medallist with England on BBC Two

England have been making comebacks all tournament.

It's the World Cup final so they can't rely on that, but it is good that they managed to use their energy so early on to fight back.

What I'd like to see is when they get an opportunity to get ahead, they make the most of it and keep that scoreboard ticking over.

Australia started really well, it took us a bit of time defensively to try and get some opposition in [and around them].

Then a master stroke to bring in Fran Williams who was the glue in that defensive end.

  4. Q2 beginspublished at 17:31 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Q2: England 13-13 Australia

Away we go for the second quarter. Jess Thirlby said to the bench during her quarter-time team talk she wanted to see more variety in attack.

    What have you got Roses?

    Q1: England 13-13 Australia

Five players from that famous Commonwealth Games gold medal win five years ago on the Gold Coast are involved in the squad today.

I heard Ama Agbeze, who captained that team to glory, saying on the radio earlier that she remembers people not sleeping the night before that final.

I wonder how much kip they all got last night?

Australia are working themselves so well around the English unit defence, with the quick release straight into the post.

They are taking away the advantage of the space the England defenders can cover.

  7. Scores level after first quarterpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Q1: England 13-13 Australia

Seconds on the clock and Helen Housby, under pressure, sinks the shot just as the buzzer sounds to keep things on level terms.

England have done well to weather that storm and keep with Australia.

Nothing to separate these two so far.

  8. 'Long way to go yet'published at 17:25 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Pamela Cookey
Former England shooter on BBC TV

There's a long way to go in this game.

It's just about settling when you get the ball in hand, you know your teammates are there, you know someone will come free for a pass.

Just don't let the blood rush to your head.

    Q1: England 12-12 Australia

Less than a minute on the clock as Imogen Allison flies in with the interception to give England a chance to draw level.

Helen Housby does what she does.

    Q1: England 11-12 Australia

    How good is Fran Williams?!

Straight into the thick of it. She moves around her marker and gets the tip, but England get a bit too excited and overcook it down court.

But that is the sort of thing Jess Thirlby will want to see more of.

    Q1: England 10-11 Australia

Oops, wayward pass there from Cara Koenen and Geva Mentor is there, putting on the pressure, and it's knocked down towards Imogen Allison.

Quickly up court and England convert. Better from the Roses.

  13. 'An unfortunate start'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Beth Cobden
Former England player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It's an unfortunate start for England.

There was just one error early on so the three-goal deficit is tough to take.

    Q1: England 7-11 Australia

    There it is!

Geva Mentor puts Cara Koenen under pressure and England win the turnover.

But that's sloppy further up the court as the Roses lose the ball straight away.

Already we've got a change here. Fran Williams is coming on at goal defence, Layla Guscoth makes way.

    Q1: England 7-10 Australia

Just less than six minutes on the clock and England are going to need a bit of something here.

They really won't want to let an early lead blow out and give themselves a hill to climb.

  16. 'Lots of room in attack for the Diamonds'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Madison Browne
    Australia mid-court on BBC TV

There's a lot of space in that attack end for the Diamonds. Yesterday there wasn't a lot of room to move against Jamaica.

Once again, a different opponent provides different challenges, but it looks like they've got a lot of room in the attack end at the moment.

  17. Postpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Q1: England 6-9 Australia

    Agh!

Patient build-up play from England but Helen Housby has no choice but to go for the long ball in to Eleanor Cardwell.

Cardwell has her hand to it but her foot just creeps out of court and that's a backline pass for the Diamonds.

  19. 'Bruce v Cardwell a match-up for the ages'published at 17:15 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

Cardwell evades a tip attempt from Bruce.Image source, Getty Images

It is a match-up for the ages isn't it, Bruce v Cardwell?

Everyone has enjoyed watching it in the Suncorp Super League this season.

Obviously Australia head coach Stacey Marinkovich thinks Bruce will do well, but Cardwell had the best of her the other night, so Bruce will come out firing knowing she is 1-0 down.

It is going to be an interesting match-up.

  20. Postpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Q1: England 5-6 Australia

Eleanor Cardwell sinks a shot and raises her arms, shouting 'come on!' to get the crowd going.

She wants them in on this one.
