  1. PENALTYpublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

    Lithuania 0-1 Northern Ireland

Michael Smith wins a penalty! His shot is blocked by the hands of Linas Megelaitis.

The full back drives forward and cuts inside. He lets fly and the handball is as clear as day when the midfielder dived in.

    Conor Washington steps up....

Jamal Lewis' deep cross is missed by the home keeper and it falls to Michael Smith at the back post.

However his effort is weak and it cleared behind for a corner.

That was a decent chance and it could have been the perfect start to the second half.

Yes,he will have be wishing Shayne Lavery had taken one of the chances he had, but Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has got to be happy with that half.

His side went into this match under huge pressure to get a much-needed win and they have delivered so far.

The back three have looked solid, Steven Davis is enjoying himself in the middle of the park and what the front two may lack in stature they have made up for in energy and pace.

Baraclough would have taken that as a first-half performance, but you can't be sure that a second goal won't be needed.

Well, here's something that we never thought we'd see. If you though Ronaldo to City would have been the surprise transfer of the season then think again...

Crusaders legend Colin Coates has joined north Belfast rivals Cliftonville.

Coates, who has six NI caps, won three league titles and two Irish Cups during a successful 18 years at Seaview before a shock exit from the Crues in January 2020.

However that surprise doesn't come anywhere close to seeing him put on a Cliftonville shirt.

Think Sol Campbell, Luis Figo or Carlos Tevez - this is just as big in the weird and wonderful world that is the Irish League.

We need this second goal. We started shockingly and they got confidence from that until we scored. We controlled it for 20 minutes or so after that but we let them back into again. We have to see this through and it isn't over, and Ian will be warning the players of that in the dressing room. If we get the second goal we will win convincingly.

It's great to see so many of the Green and White Army in the stands this evening.

Dan Ballard's goal was a nice reward for those who made the 1,775-mile trip to Vilnius.

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

    Lithuania 0-1 Northern Ireland

There goes the half-time whistle in Vilnius.

That was a bit sketchy towards the end.

    Rest, regroup and go again...

  11. CLOSE!published at 20:32 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

    Lithuania 0-1 Northern Ireland

Lithuania win a corner as the clock ticks into added time and Arvydas Novikovas whips the ball into the area.

It falls to Dubickas but Ali McCann sticks in a leg to put the striker off as he goes to hit it. Phew!

The watertight Italian defence has been breached! Bulgaria have equalised through Atanas Iliev with five minutes to go until half-time.

We didn't see that one coming...

The bounce of the ball just isn't going in Lavery's favour this evening.

He races forward as Conor Washington carries the ball on the counter from a Lithuania free-kick.

He's timed his run to perfection but the ball holds up on the plastic turf and it allows the yellow shirts to get back and smother the forward.

Five minutes to go until half-time. It's not been pretty but it's working so far for NI.

Edgaras Dubickas can't get his feet sorted on the edge of the area otherwise he could have clean through on Bailey Peacock-Farrell's goal.

Good feet for a big man is the old cliché, but the home forward's touch has let him down on several occasions already.

You don't want to give him many more chance to get it right, however.

Northern Ireland win a free-kick wide on the left and try to work it quickly to Shayne Lavery, who is so far offside he may as well be back in Belfast.

    Nice idea, badly executed.

Edgaras Utkus is booked for catching the foot of Michael Smith, who is back up on his feet after having a brief rest on the turf.

    He's a tough cookie, I think he'll carry on.

  19. CLOSE!published at 20:17 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

Okay, there's the warning that NI didn't want.

Linas Megelaitis plays a tasty ball over the top and Edgaras Dubickas air kicks the ball when he maybe had time to take a touch before shooting.

That was a bit of a let off.

  20. Dan delivers as NI dictatepublished at 20:16 British Summer Time 2 September 2021

    Lithuania 0-1 Northern Ireland

    Mark Sterling
    BBC Sport NI

Well wasn't that just what Northern Ireland needed.

After an untidy opening spell, Ian Baraclough's men have played their way into this match and have been well on top for the last 10 minutes.

Dan Ballard's goal will have settled any nerves on what really is a huge night for a team massively in need of all three points.

They have bossed possession and Conor Washington is linking the play well up top, with Shayne Lavery being his live-wire self alongside him.

So far, so good for Northern Ireland.
