    Quote Message

You wonder if Baraclough would consider putting Lafferty on to work with Lavery and compete with this tall Lithuania defence.

It's been a tough year or so for Northern Ireland but Dan Ballard has definitely been a ray of light.

    The future of NI's defence?

Elsewhere in Group C, European Champions Italy have continued where they left off from the summer and Federico Chiesa has opened the scoring against Bulgaria.

Some player, it's a shame he doesn't have any relatives from Lurgan or somewhere like that...

This is good from the visitors now.

Ali McCann finds some space and Preston's new man has a go from 20 yards.

It's low and well struck, but Ernestas Šetkus is equal to it and pushes the ball away.

You'd imagine this will play into Northern Ireland's hands as Lithuanian will have to take the handbrake off their yellow bus.

    Lithuania 0-1 Northern Ireland

DANIEL BALLARD GETS HIS FIRST INTERNATIONAL GOAL!

It's another terrible corner but Davis picks up the second ball and he feeds Conor Washington on the right-hand side of the area.

The forward whips in a low ball, it beats the defender and keeper which allows Ballard to tap home from close range at the back post.

He really couldn't miss and NI get their reward for dominating play in the opening 20 minutes.

A Jordan Thompson corner is headed away at the front post, which has to be one of the most-frustrating things for any football fan.

It's all a bit disjointed at the moment but the men in green are starting to see more of the ball.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Steven Davis is dictating things in the middle.

Italy and Bulgaria are also in Group C action tonight as the Euro 2020 winners play their first match since beating England on penalties in July. We'll keep you posted on any score in Florence.

Sorry for bringing that shootout back up...

This has been a busy start as NI race up the other end of the pitch and Shayne Lavery is inches away from connecting on a powerful, low ball into the area.

If it's grass he's getting a touch, but the plastic surface meant the ball skid away from him as he dived in.

    That's much better.

Lithuania nearly do a Healy to Clingan move!

A short corner finds Edgaras Dubickas, who is leaning back and it's skied into the night.

    Big chance!

    Lithuania 0-0 Northern Ireland

Lithuania have settled really well here on the shiny surface, in complete contrast to NI who look a yard behind their opponents.

The hosts have the first chance after a minute.

Arvydas Novikovas lets fly from outside of the area but it's well blocked by a wall of green.

Let's hope that's not a sign of things to come...

Lithuania v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

The history-making Stephanie Frappart is the referee for tonight's match in Vilnius.

The Frenchwoman, 37, became the first to referee in a men's Champions League match in December.

She was also the first female referee to take charge of a men's World Cup Qualifier in March.

Frappart refereed the women's World Cup final between the US and the Netherlands in 2019 as well as the Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea in the same year.

She has also took charge of men's matches in Ligue 1 and the Europa League.

    Not a bad CV!

Kyle Lafferty, Paddy McNair and Jordan Thompson are the three players walking on a tightrope in Lithuania this evening.

A yellow card this evening would see them ruled out of Wednesday's qualifier with Switzerland at Windsor Park.

George Saville is sitting tonight's match out for that very reason.

    Behave, boys...

In a blow to the hosts, manager Valdas Ivanauskas won't be able to take to the dugout after testing positive for Covid-19.

Former Hearts boss Ivanauskas, who was only appointed last month, was due to lead out the national team for the first time in the Group C encounter in Vilnius but is now isolating.
