    Switzerland 2-0 Northern Ireland

Can it never be straightforward against the Swiss?

Northern Ireland can't dwell on the result as they travel to Bulgaria on Tuesday night. It's another big one and Ian Baraclough will want his side, minus Jamal Lewis, to bounce back with a big three points.

You can read Mark Sterling's report on a controversial encounter here, and we'll start to gear up for Tuesday's trip to Sofia.

That's all for this evening. See you on Tuesday.

We rallied around and everyone was positive going into the second half. We knew we had to stick in and cover for each other. We knew we had to be organised, but they were going to tire. We need to make sure we are in the mix if they make a mistake. They have to play Italy before we do, so if they do slip up we have to put ourselves in a position where we are able to capitalise. That is where we will focus on towards Tuesday.

I didn't get to speak to them [the officials] because they don't want to listen. There was no conversation going on and there is no talking. You want an explanation, they knew they had made a mistake. The Swiss didn't need any help, I think a lot of decisions that were 50/50 went their way and sometimes you have to accept that when you are going away from home. The crowd are asking for decisions, the players are asking for decisions. They are a good team and they have good players. They are strong and they can open you up, but even with 10 men they didn't open us up that many times. Yes, they had chances, they were always going to have chances, but we kept ourselves in the game.

There was certainly no warnings of people getting booked or something would be done about it if we don't hurry up. If there's not a throw on for him he isn't just going to throw it to a Switzerland player, is he? Was he time wasting? I think he was looking for an option to throw it to. It's ruined the game. The lads out there have given absolutely everything. We tried to get to half-time to reorganise and they have scored with the last kick of the first half which makes it a totally different game.

As expected, Ian Baraclough isn't one bit happy with the decision to send Jamal Lewis off...

    Quote Message

To be warned of time wasting after 37 minutes? I think he has forgotten he hasn't spoken to Jamal once. The first time he has asked him to hurry up he has brought out the yellow card. I think he realises he has booked him, and he can't go back on his decision. I think it is a terrible decision. He has not realised he has booked him earlier on. He has not given Jamal any warning so he has no clue he's on a warning. It's a diabolical decision and it's changed the course of the game.

The red card decision was ludicrous, mind boggling really. Northern Ireland were on the back foot after that.

You have to give credit to the Northern Ireland players for a tremendous performance as they basically had to defend for 90 minutes. They had nothing going forward but when Jamal Lewis was sent-off that was the game effectively over.

Switzerland were good value for their win but everyone, and we mean everyone, is talking about that first-half red card for Jamal Lewis.

Northern Ireland's World Cup hopes are all but over.

GOAL - Christian Faasnachtpublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Switzerland 2-0 Northern Ireland

    That's it over. Heartbreak.

A goal in first-half stoppage time, a goal in second-half stoppage time.

Northern Ireland had committed everyone up front as they looked for a late equaliser, and the Swiss break in efficient fashion.

Embolo finds the unmarked Fassnacht, who has all the time in the world to pick his spot from the edge of the area.

Peacock-Farrell got a hand to it, but it wasn't enough to keep it out and the Swiss are cruising to three points.

    More yellow cards.

Denis Zakaria is booked for a tackle in the middle of the pitch, Josh Magennis is booked for existing.

  17. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:34 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

    Switzerland 1-0 Northern Ireland

You're having a laugh, seconds after Jordan Jones isn't awarded a foul in the far corner, Conor Bradley sticks in a heavy challenge on former Liverpool team-mate Shaqiri.

It probably was a yellow card, and the youngster can't help but smile at that one.

  18. CLOSE!published at 21:33 British Summer Time 9 October 2021

Embolo should have had a hat-trick tonight.

He makes the most of a Ballard slip in the area. He opens up his body but he doesn't get enough bend his effort to find the far corner from 12 yards.

He kicks the advertising boards in frustration. No damage done.
