They had responded superbly to going down to 10 men, and looked like they had made it to half-time at 0-0 and the opportunity for a breather and to regroup.
A mix-up in defence let the Swiss in for the goal and manager Ian Baraclough will have a massive team-talk on his hands right now as he works out where to go from here.
It may not have been beyond NI's 10 men to hang on for a scoreless draw, but going and equalising from here will be a massive ask.
But they have no choice but to try. Defeat, remember, all but ends their World Cup dreams.

Embolo breaks through a couple of challenges after being played through by Renato Steffan.
He slips to the ground but finds Zuber, who keeps his cool to tuck home the opener from the edge of the area. It's a calamity at the back for Northern Ireland and compounds a difficult few minutes.
Ouch.

After being booked for taking down Embolo, it's fair to say the left back isn't rushing to take a throw in on halfway as he looks for an option.
Slovanian referee Slavko Vinčić is straight over and flashes a second yellow for time wasting, much to the bemusement of everyone in white and on the NI bench.
Ian Baraclough is absolutely furious on the touchline. That's bizarre.
