Great Britain, who won bronze at London 2012 you will remember, are camped in the Australia half. Can they make a breakthrough? Not yet.

The Hockeyroos (possibly the worst nickname in sport) bounce back, British keeper Maddie Hinch needing to be alert to block.

David: Hockey must be exhausting to play - all the players seem to have to run up & down the pitch very quickly very often

Good call. What's the toughest Olympic event, physically? Got to be rowing hasn't it?

I couldn't do any of them, obviously, but the rowers always look absolutely finished at the end of the race...

The game's first penalty corner goes to Australia and Crista Cullen charges it down like a bull to take the ball full in the stomach. She hits the deck. That was like something from a Game of Thrones battle scene.

"Let's go GB, let's go" is the chant from a portion of this crowd. It sounds like friends and family of players as they are relentless in their noise.

Australia the better side as that quarter ends. Maddie Hinch has made a handful of saves for Britain.

Remember, it's four quarters and not two halves now in hockey at the Olympics so the added intensity may prove sapping.

"It has been an absorbing first quarter. There hasn't been any goals but both teams have come to win three points. It has not been cagey. Australia have arguably had the better chances but it has been positive for Great Britain."

Yep, this one is going the distance. Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens levels the match against American veteran Venus Williams with a dominant performance in the second set.

That doesn't stop the Americans in the Rio crowd enjoying themselves. Plenty of Stars and Stripes flag waving and hip wiggling from the Venus fans at the changeover.
