In 600m the South Africans have taken two lengths out of the current Olympic silver medallists so they should take great confidence in that.

In the first half, it was all about the British pair, in the second half it was ALL about the South Africans.

Smashed it. The South African pairing is slick as you like in taking victory here.

But Great Britain's Richard Chambers and Will Fletcher are through to the semi-finals with them in second.

The rest of the field go through to repechage: Switzerland in third, China in fourth and Brazil the last boat of five.

Next up? Helen Glover and Heather Stanning in the women's pair heats...

If you're unfamiliar with the background story to William Fox-Pitt's participation at these Games, head over here.

He suffered a head trauma when he fell from his horse at the World Young Horse Championships in France - and is now competing just 10 months after being placed in an induced coma.

He was treated at Poole hospital and they've sent this goodwill message for the 47-year-old.

“All at Poole Hospital are thrilled with the progress William has made, and have been watching his return not only to health but to the highest levels of sporting achievement with enormous interest and pride.

“William’s recovery has been remarkable and we wish him the best of luck in his Olympic endeavours.”

Just when I thought the Youth Arena was going to become my favourite Deodoro venue comes this - Canoe Slalom. It took two buses to get here and I have no idea how I'll make it back to the women's rugby sevens semi final by 19:00 BST but boy is this impressive.

There are 25 million litres of water running over this course and a practice course combined.

Team GB have David Florence and Richard Hounslow set for action in the C2 class - essentially a two-man canoe.

Then it's Fiona Pennie in the K1 - a single persons kayak - in heats also.

Hounslow and Florence are a medal chance. No side has visited this centre more than GB's in the run up to the Games. They know the 250m course inside out.

It's was all square going into the third round of the men's 49kg light-flyweight bout between Ireland's Ireland's flag bearer, Paddy Barnes and Spain's Samuel Carmona...

A cracking right hook from Barnes says to us he is looking the stronger in this final round. But wait, is that a nick on his eye?

    How will this end.....?

WOW. It's a shock split decision as Paddy Barnes iseliminated in his third Olympic Games...

Spain's Carmona looks delighted and will advance to the quarter final.

Team GB's silver medallists from 2012 David Florence and Richard Hounslow take to the stage/spray in the C2 canoeing heats at 16:45 BST today.

The French pair of Gauthier Klauss and Matthieu Peche are most likely to threaten the Brits who only managed fifth place in last years' World Championships.

GB's Fiona Pennie also runs in the women's K1 singles - she should be out at around 17:30.

A little bit extra to this one - Pavia is the partner of GB men's judoka Ashley McKenzie, who exited the competition yesterday.

Well it's the best British score on the course so far, but there's a sense William Fox-Pitt will be slightly disappointed with that.

He had led after the first eventing phase but has now slipped to fifth overall. Still a chance he could make it back to the top of the pile in the jumping though - that's to come tomorrow.

And later today, we'll be seeing Pippa Funnell and Kitty King go round too.

"If the boat had toppled I would not only swim and save my own life, I would try to help as many people as possible,” he told Time magazine., external
