I was discussing the prospects of Great British sailor Giles Scott with BBC TV presenter John Inverdale this morning and he brought up a valid point about how widely he registered in the national consciousness.

Scott is a four-time world champion in the Finn class, yet outside of sailing circles and some very keen sports fans, he is not a man of great renown, having been beaten to the British spot in the Finn at London 2012 by Sir Ben Ainslie.

That could change if he wins gold on his Olympic debut, with his first race now under way.

Away from the tennis, boats are on the water at the Marina da Gloria.

Now serial gold-medal winner Sir Ben Ainslie has turned his attention to the America's Cup, Giles Scott has the chance to emerge from his shadow.

Scott, who has won three world championships in a row, has begun his Olympic campaign in the Finn class.

Hmmmm, I might have gone early in proclaiming a procession for Andy Murray. Juan Monaco has broken back, courtesy of a couple of glorious forehands. The champ may yet have to work a touch harder.

Just a bit more on that stunning win for Japan over New Zealand in the rugby sevens. There are 12 teams in the competition, split into three groups of four. The top from each group, plus two best third-placed teams, go through to the quarter-finals, so it's far from a disaster for the All Blacks.

Grabbed a quick word with 2008 Olympic men's lightweight double champion Mark Hunter, who says it's been a "mixed" morning for the GB rowers.

"Three crews are through to the final, including the women's double of Katherine Grainger and Vicky Thornley, who made the most of their weaker semi-final but still put it out there using textbook tactics," he says. "Katherine used her all experience."

"As for the lightweight men's four going out, that is very disappointing. They just didn't have the gears to go through, whereas the lightweight women's pair of Kat Copeland and Charlotte Taylor have had no form all season."

Andy Murray is here for a good time, not a long time. In the battle of the white caps he's already a break up on Juan Monaco, who at one point in the second game collapsed in a heap clutching his back. One-way traffic so far.

Japan, who stunned South Africa in the 15-a-side World Cup, have just beaten New Zealand - including Sonny Bill Williams - in the sevens.

Great Britain should take notice - they play Japan at 21:00 tonight.

That deciding set between Ferrer and Donsky means that Johanna Konta will have to wait to get her match with Svetlana Kuznetsova under way. Murray, who began with a double fault, is on the board.

Did I mention that it was warm enough to fry an egg on court one? Spectators are using whatever they can to protect themselves from the sun's rays - newspapers, flags, brollies. Even cameramen are under big unbarellas such is the sun's glare.

Predictably, David Ferrer's match with Russia's Evgeny Donskoy has gone into a third set after the Russian won the tie-break.

Knocking-up done, quick swig of something, both players sheltered by staff holding green umbrellas. Murray goes to the far end, wiping his face with a white towel. The defending champ will serve first.

I say Monaco is clad in red, but it's only really red adorning his shoulders. The rest of his shirt, shorts and cap are pearly white. The stadium is about half full in the Rio sunshine. El scorchio out there.

A lady in front of me in a yellow top has turned a programme into a fan to cool herself in the midday sun. To the left of me, a bald man's head is sweating like a racehorse. No headwear to protect himself.. He'll regret that. They call this Brazil's winter, but it's like watching tennis in a pizza oven.

Regardless of the weather, David Ferrer will always be tigerish on the court. He's dragged himself back into contention in the second set, but I'm prepared for this one to go the distance. It is David Ferrer after all.

We'll let you know about those indvidual medals in the equestrian as they happen but, for now, is anyone for tennis?

Andy Murray, omnipresent white cap atop his head, is knocking up with the red-clad Juan Monaco. We'll be keeping an eye on this and Johanna Konta's second-round match.

Elsewhere, there are gold medals to be decided in equestrian, weightlifting, judo and shooting, as well as the heats of the men's 100m freestyle and some more rugby sevens with Great Britain taking on Japan.

And, already, we have the first of those gold medals.... 

Later, Great Britain are sniffing medals.

In the men's C1 canoeing, two-time silver medalist David Florence goes in his semi-final at 18:03. The final follows from around 19:15

Then, from 20:00, we'll need to split our attention. Great Britain go in both the final of women's team gymnastics and the women's 10m synchronised platform diving. More on those later. 

Netherlands rider Merel Blom goes into her show jumping round knowing that if she executes faultlessly, her team will beat Britain to fifth.

Good show, not a fence touched... but two time penalties. Will that count? 

It does! Netherlands finish on 252.6, GB on 252.1! What drama! 

Well, it's as dramatic as a battle for fifth can get, but we've got to cling to something.

The battle for the medals will be between Australia, New Zealand, Germany and France.

Our immediate attention will be on tennis.

Now that America's Madison Keys has taken care of Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, Centre Court is clear for Andy Murray to play his second-round match against Argentina's Juan Monaco.

Murray is likely to be on court at the same time as Johanna Konta. She's waiting on the outcome of the contest between David Ferrer and Evgeny Donskoy. Ferrer is a set up.
