    Tennis

British women's number Johanna Konta outlasted Russian eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6 7-5 7-5 to reach the women's singles quarter-finals in an thrilling but draining match yesterday.

In three hours and seven minutes of gripping tennis, Konta repeatedly fought back, having been a break down in the second and third sets.

She was close to exiting when facing four break points at 4-4 and 5-5 in the second set, and was down 0-40 on serve at 5-5 in the deciding set but somehow found a way to win.

The 25-year-old 10th seed deserves a rest but isn't going to get one, taking on Germany's Australian Open champion and Wimbledon finalist Angelique Kerber on court one from around 17:30 BST, weather dependent.

After that, she teams up with Jamie Murray against Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock in the first round of the mixed doubles.

She should sleep well after all that..

    Tennis

It's all been very straightforward so far for Andy Murray as he defends his men's singles title.

On Monday he brushed aside Argentina's Juan Monaco 6-3 6-1 having lost only five games in his first-round match.

The Wimbledon champion, 29, has now won 14 matches in a row since losing the French Open final in June.

After the delay to the start of play, were expecting him to take on Italy's Fabio Fognini in the last 16 from approximately 19:00 BST.

If you're looking for a talented but temperamental Italian prone to emotional outbursts straight out of central casting, Fognini is your man. Should be fun.

"The issue is on the bends and on the descents through the trees. The inter-section between the damp and the dry causes problems.

"It looks like it is drying out on the course in places. If it continues like this and it's bone dry later, the later starters will have the advantage."

'Mama, why are you crying?'published at 14:28 British Summer Time 10 August 2016

    Women's time trial

Kristin Armstrong has told Radio 5 live that winning a third consecutive Olympic time trial gold medal makes it "a special day".

She revealed: "About five kilometres to go my coach told me over the radio I had to decide what colour medal I wanted today and I had to go because I was three seconds down.

"I wanted to leave it all out there, everything."

Armstrong's four-year-old son Lucas was on hand to give her a hug at the end but was confused by her reaction to winning.

"He asked me after the race 'Mama, why are you crying? Didn't you win?' I told him that was a really good question and I was crying because I was so happy."
