“I feel absolutely terrible saying this but if she doesn’t win five of the six Olympic gold medals it would be a disappointment.”

Born to a mother struggling with drug and alcohol issues, taken into foster care and then adopted by her grandparents, Simone Biles is the figurehead of this United States team.

The British have performed fantastically well. There have been a few ups and downs in the championships but they have not let it affect them.

They have carried on fighting right through and gave a great performance today.

What a fantastic final, some great gymnastics going on. This has been truly great.

USA did not disappoint and there will be talk if this is the greatest team ever.

Rio 2016 Olympics: USA storm to gymnastics gold

Overwhelming favourites the United States blew away the field to win Olympic gold in the women's gymnastics team event as Great Britain finished fifth.

Led by Simone Biles, the USA scored 184.897 points to retain their crown and win a fifth successive global title.

Russia claimed silver with 176.688, ahead of bronze medallists China (176.003) and Japan (174.371).

Great Britain, seeking a first medal in the event since 1928, scored 174.362.

The British team - Claudia Fragapane, Becky Downie, Ellie Downie, Ruby Harrold and Amy Tinkler - finished fourth in qualifying on Monday and had high hopes of a podium place after winning bronze at last year's World Championships in Glasgow.

Elsewhere Helen Glover and Heather Stanning are in semi-final action on the water, Johanna Konta takes on Wimbledon finalist Angelique Kerber in the tennis quarter-finals and the Great Britain sevens team take on the not-so-mighty All Blacks.

Emma Pooley will show Froome and Thomas the way.

The 33-year-old was tempted out of retirement by British Cycling, who believed that the hilly Rio course would suit her.

Pooley won silver in the Switzerland half-Ironman in June as she pursued her regular day job. She is not short of stamina.

But she will need a strong performance to challenge and prove to her knockers that her selection above cycling specialists was justified.

    Men's time trial - 14:00 BST

    Muddied, bloodied, but unbroken.

Britain's Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome survived the wreckage of a helter-skelter men's road race on Saturday.

Now, they have a clean shot at a medal, without the chaos and confusion of other riders and the anaconda of a course from the weekend.

Today is the time trial - the so-called 'race of truth'. Can they find the right answers when the lactic starts to twist their muscles into knots?
