It is perhaps fortunate that the men's 100m freestyle is way past the watershed at 03:00 BST Thursday morning.

Lining up alongside Britain's Duncan Scott in the race will be Canada's Santo Condorelli, whose pre-race routine involves sticking his middle finger up at his dad.

It is a rather sweet, if sweary story.

As a kid Condorelli was intimidated on the blocks as he lined up alongside bigger, broader competitors.

"I told him, ‘Enough is enough. When you get on the blocks, just put everything out of your mind and swim like there’s nobody near you," his father Joseph told swimswam.com, external in January.

"He said to me, 'How do you do that?' and I said, 'Well, you say f*** it.' So he looked at me in the crowd, and we both gave each other the finger, and he started winning race after race and we never looked back."

Rio 2016 Olympics: USA's Serena Williams knocked out of singles

A big shock in the tennis overnight as defending women's singles champion Serena Williams put in an error-strewn display in losing 6-4 6-3 to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, ranked 20th in the world.

Top seed Williams, who served five double faults in the seventh game of the second set, was left in tears afterwards and said that "the better player won".

Svitolina, who will face the Czech Republic's Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals, said: "It's an unreal feeling for me. This is just a perfect moment."

At 34 and having lost in the women's doubles with sister Venus, you'd think Serena is unlikely to add to her tally of four Olympic medals. But this is Serena Williams we're talking about.

Her defeat means Angelique Kerber and Madison Keys are the only top-eight seeds remaining of what had appeared a very strong field.

It was day four of Rio 2016 before TV viewers in North Korea got their first look at action from the Games, BBC Monitoring reports.

The state-run Central Television station showed brief highlights from the opening game in women's football competition between Brazil and Sweden before action from the women's volleyball match between Russia and Argentina, which the rest of the world saw on Sunday.

Then Britain's Paul Drinkhall got some air-time with coverage of his first-round table tennis victory, also from the first day of the Games.

Bizarrely, neither match was shown to its conclusion.

Locals don't appear to have been told of the country's successes so far – two silvers in weightlifting – but yesterday's main news bulletin kept them fully up-to-date with advances in mushroom farming and third anniversary reminiscences of leader Kim Jong-un's visit to Pyongyang's spectacular Water Park.
