World champions France were half a boat's length clear of the rest.

The United States scurried in after them, but Great Britain's Richard Chambers and Will Fletcher pay for the over-ambitious start and are edged out by Paul and Gary O'Donovan of Ireland.

They will go into the B final where pride rather than medals are the prize.

    Unstoppable. Quite possibly.

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover are looking as good a bet for gold as anyone in this British team. This is their commanding semi-final victory.

They are almost as good a combination as Gibson and Glover in Lethal Weapon.

    Ask your parents.

The lightweight double sculls was the event that Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase - British rowing's odd couple - won silver at at London 2012.

Will Fletcher and Richard Chambers will be up against it to match that.

France are a second ahead at 500m. They are the current world champions and their boat features Jeremie Azou, who is undefeated since the beginning of 2015.

The respective partners of defending women's pair champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning went through the grinder in the heats, but that was an easier watch for Steve Backshall and Johnny (above).

"They needed a strong performance today and it couldn't have been much stronger than that, they looked so relaxed," said Steve. "The start was extraordinary, they went out like lightening."

Johnny added: "Initially, that was gut-wrenching then just fantastic and they looked strong."

Are they confident for tomorrow's final? "Yes," says Johnny. "Nervous and confident!"

    China catch crabs

What scenes in the women's lightweight double sculls semi!

China are riding in second position when they catch an almighty crab - plunging the blade into the water on the way forward on your seat rather than when you are sliding back - to fly into reverse.

They scramble back into contention and scrape through in third behind South Africa and New Zealand.

That semi-final was slower than the first, but the Danish pair are draping their legs into the water to try and ease off the lactic.

The gold medal will go to one of the boats in the first semi-final and, if Great Britain row like they did just now, it will go to them.

    Second semi-final

A comprehensive victory from the Danish pair of Rasmussen and Anderson in the second women's pairs semi-final, but they are 10 seconds off the pace set by Helen Glover and Heather Stanning of Great Britain in the first semi.

New Zealand and Spain fill the second and third slots to also make their way into the final.

Fair to say its was a muted start at the Marapendi course on golf's return to the Olympics after 112 years. Not so much an "I was there" moment as "I was there but none of the world's top four were".

But let's give it a chance - GB's Danny Willett tees off at 1303 BST and Justin Rose at 1458, with Open champion Henrik Stenson at 1509 and Bubba Watson/Martin Kaymer at 1314.

Can rowing add to the GB medal haul?published at 12:45 British Summer Time 11 August 2016

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport in Rio

Once Helen Glover and Heather Stanning and the men's four, are done in their respective semi-finals, there are four chances for GB medals today.

The men's quad, the men's pair, and the men's and women's double sculls crews have all made the final.

Defending women's double sculls champion Katherine Grainger, 40, can become GB's most decorated female Olympian if she makes the podium.

Every stroke, the GB boat of Stanning and Glover is moving probably a good six inches further than the Americans and the South Africans but their stroke rates are the same. That's how much more powerful they are.

They finish their semi-final a metaphorical mile ahead of the Americans.

They are one race away from defending their Olympic gold...

    Semi final 1 result:

    1. Great Britain

    2. USA
