There were tears of joy for Chris Mears and JackLaugher as they secured Britain's first Olympic diving gold medal in the men's synchronised 3m springboard.
The Britons scored a total of 454.32 to end China's hopes of a clean sweep of diving golds at the Games.
Qin Kai and Cao Yuan had to settle for bronze (443.70) behind US pair Sam Dorman and Mike Hixon (450.21).
Mears was given a 5% chance of surviving in 2009 after contracting the life-threatening Epstein Barr virus.
Kayaker Joe Clarke and diving duo Jack Laugher and Chris Mears won Great Britain's second and third golds of the Games with another four bronzes from cyclist Chris Froome, shooter Steven Scott, judoka Sally Conway and gymnast Max Whitlock.
All of which took Britain motoring to ninth on the medals table.

Six gold medals in a 10 hour, 10 minute blitz, external that left the nation giddy and glorious.
Wednesday, 10 August 2016 didn't touch those heights, but it was a jumpstart to a Rio campaign that had coasted rather than roared out of the blocks.
