Approximately 40,000 sold entry tickets to the 2016 Rio Olympics went unused on the first full day of the games on Saturday, due to the long queues and delays at the Olympic Park and the Deodoro complex, Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported on 10 August., external The delays came about due to flaws in the security teams, which were not sufficiently staffed.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Committee have said they are working to provide compensation to those that missed events. Brazilian Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes said the organisational failings of day one will not be repeated.

    Disappointment in 2012...

In our 08:16 BST entry, we mentioned Jack Laugher's mistimed jump at London 2012 that resulted in him going into the pool feet first.

In one of our stories from four years ago, a then 17-year-old Laugher spoke about how he intended to get over that disappointment.

Presciently, he said that "2016 is when I'm going to be at my peak performance, I hope".

    That worked out OK, Jack.

Max Whitlock has further chances for Olympic medals as he has qualified for the floor and pommel horse finals.

"My coach and I have been working so hard over the past four years. We stepped out of London 2012 and I wanted to prove myself as an all-rounder and I've done that. I feel I've completed that target now," he said.

"That Team GB have won more medals today makes it even better. We are very strong, we're such a big team, and hopefully everyone can be proud of our achievements today."

It wasn't all about gold medals for GB on day five - there were four bronzes won as well.

Max Whitlock secured Great Britain's first all-around gymnastics Olympics medal since the London Olympics.

The London Olympics of 1908, that is.

The 23-year-old was one of the first to go in the last of six rotations and had to sit and wait anxiously after his floor routine to see if his rivals would deny him a medal.

Whitlock's medal is only the ninth won by British gymnasts at Olympic Games and he has three of them after taking bronze in the team event and in the individual pommel horse at London 2012.

Japan's Kohei Uchimura, dominant in the event since 2009, retained his title and Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev took silver after an error on his final apparatus, while Whitlock finished with a points total of 90.641, only 0.143 more than Russia's David Belyavskiy in fourth.

Joe Clarke's friends and family seemed rather pleased with his kayak gold medal, judging by the picture above.

And the man himself said he was "made up" after his victory.

"I knew I was capable but to put down that run in the Olympic final, it is a dream come true," he told Radio 5 live.

"There has been lots of ups and downs but it is just fantastic.

"When I woke up I struggled to have breakfast I was so nervous with all the emotions. I thought if it goes to plan I could come away with a medal but to be Olympic champion it is something you dream about."

The canoe slalom is just brilliantly exciting, isn't it? And it was the source of Great Britain's second gold medal of Rio 2016.

Great Britain's Joe Clarke produced a stunning final run to triumph in the kayak K1.

The 23-year-old British number one from Staffordshire qualified third fastest for the final but posted a time of 88.53 seconds to take first place.

Slovenia's Peter Kauzer finished 0.17 seconds behind the Briton, with Czech Jiri Prskavec, who picked up a penalty, taking bronze.

Clarke was an outside chance for a medal going into the competition but his odds shortened after his semi-final.

In addition to Epstein-Barr virus, a ruptured spleen and a 5% chance of survival, his mother died when he was two and his grandma passed away last year just as he was suffering a messy break-up.

Jack Laugher had his own reasons for feeling emotional after a miserable experience at London 2012.

Then 17, he was the youngest person in the 3m individual springboard event and struggled for his best form in the Aquatics Centre.

It culminated in a terrible final dive where he mistimed his jump and landed in feet first (which you can watch, one minute and 10 seconds in, here).

"I feel like I had a point to prove here - that's why I was so emotional at the end," he told BBC Sport.

"It was a reflection of how hard we have worked since London. This is the big one. To do it alongside my best friend it is beyond worth it. It is my absolute dream."

No wonder housemates Chris Mears and Jack Laugher were so emotional after winning gold, given what the former went through seven years ago.

Mears, 23, collapsed in January 2009 with a ruptured spleen, losing five pints of blood, before leaving hospital a month later after having his spleen removed.

He made a full recovery and returned to the pool in 2010, going on to finish fourth in the synchro at that year's Commonwealth Games.

"After going through all that horrible experience, just making the 2012 Olympics in London was enough for me. That was great," Mears told BBC Sport.

"But we were in a different position at this Games. We knew we could get medals here, we kind of thought we could get gold, but to actually get it is just incredible."
