India may not be enjoying much success at the Games, despite taking its largest ever team, but the country has scored a small victory in the village with the announcement that authentic Indian food will be served in the dining hall for the first time.

Indian media say that the decision was taken due to a “concerted effort” led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include an “Indian Kitchen” at the Village. The menu has been designed to allay worries that Indian athletes "may not get vegetarian food or instead be served non-vegetarian options that they cannot eat", according to a report on the Zee TV website.

Fiji's gold-medal final victory over Great Britain in last night's sevens brought a nation to a stand-still.

Banks closed, shops shut and revellers took over the streets of Suva dancing, singing and cheering.

One of the men behind it all was English coach Ben Ryan. He resigned as England coach in 2013 and took up the more precarious position with Fiji last that same year.

Compared to the other teams in the competition, Fiji lack facilities, cash and even petrol.

But in natural talent and enthusiasm they more than make up for it.

“The guys will be remembered forever if they bring that gold home,” Ryan told the Daily Telegraph earlier this month. “They will get lambs. They will get statues. They will be made ministers. The party will last until 2017.”

It made sense that Buzz Aldrin, a man who has walked on the moon and lived without gravity, was in Rio to watch a teenage compatriot defy the earth's forces like no other athlete in history.

The former astronaut cheered as the United States won the women's gymnastics team title on Tuesday and saluted the special quintet, one of whom was the extraordinary Simone Biles.

Biles, the innovator, the ground-breaker, is a gymnast who comes along every other generation or so - a 19-year-old hailed as the most talented anyone has seen. She is already a superstar of her sport and, by the time the Olympic flame is extinguished, is likely to orbit the same space as the planet's most recognisable stars.
