Belgian heptathlete Nafi Thiam beat GB's Jessica Ennis-Hill to gold in the early hours of Sunday morning but the BBC's language services team say we have all been pronouncing her name incorrectly.

    Apparently Thiam is pronounced 'Cham'.

We can only apologise to the Olympic champ but in our defence she did just emerge from nowhere!

Before the Rio Olympics, the head coach of the Russian fencing team, Ilgar Mamedov, promised to shave his head if his team won at least two gold medals.

After last night's victory in the women's team sabre, which was Russia's fourth gold medal in fencing, Mamedov had his head shaven by champions Yana Yegoryan and Timur Safin.

The video of the shaving 'ceremony' was posted on the Facebook page of the official Russian Fans House at Rio 2016 and featured in TV news bulletins on the morning of 14 August.

Privately-owned pro-Kremlin rolling news channel Life TV compared the stunt to Gary Lineker's making good on his promise to present MOTD in his undies if Leicester City won the Premier League.

Olympic security personnel questioned a female Iranian volleyball fan Saturday after she protested at her country's restrictions around women attending sports events back home.

"They said they didn't want the sign in front of the cameras and they asked us to leave," said Darya Safai, who was with friends also wearing the T-shirts.

The International Olympic Committee bans political statements at the Games.

However Safai has had support from USA Volleyball chairwoman Lori Okimura.

"This, to me, is not about politics, it's about gender. Volleyball has always been about equality, why now are we not sending that same consistent message?" said Okimura.

Chief sports writer Tom Fordyce was tasked with weaving the multiple narratives from rebooted Super Saturday into a single feature.

He's done a pretty darn good job of it.

"In a horrible era for the sport, its governing body shown to have been laced with corruption, its former kingpins in disgrace and its great medal-winning powerhouse Russia banned from competition for state-sponsored doping on a geopolitical scale, this was a reminder of how good it can even now sometimes still be," he writes.
