Michael Phelps gave his Facebook friends and followers a tour around his Olympic digs yesterday afternoon., external

There are fifty-five minutes of chat, including ice cream flavours and some frat-house observations about their female team-mates.

But the juicy bit was a preview of the retirement news that he told the world a few hours later at the pool after his last race of the Games.

“Going for 30 medals in Tokyo, I don’t think so, boys and girls,” Phelps said. “This is over, this is it. It’s a lot to think about, 24 years in the sport and we’re finishing up tonight.”

He may have had a gold medal around his neck on Friday night but 24 hours later, Sir Bradley Wiggins had to wear Olympic accreditation to get into the Park.

He was having a chat with fellow Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton for 5 Live and he described how his children seemed a little overwhelmed by the occasion in the velodrome and although they're old enough to understand, he's just a regular dad to them - not the most decorated British Olympian ever!

Is there a more civilised finish to an event than the heptathlon?

Last night, the whole field collected after the final 800m to salute the Rio crowd for their support.

Good luck getting the men's 100m finalists to do the same.

Peaty impresses Phelpspublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 14 August 2016

Adam Peaty hauled Great Britain from sixth to first with his second leg of breastroke in the men's 4x100m medley relay.

The 21-year-old swam his leg in 56.59 seconds in a time that was faster than the world record of 57.13 he set when winning 100m breastroke gold last Sunday and American legend Michael Phelps was suitably impressed.

"He was swearing and said '56.5 is mad'. He was pretty impressed," said Peaty.

"Looking at the TV as a kid you never think you'd impress Michael Phelps with all those golds round his neck.

"It's crazy to see what he's done and to race with him and against him. It's a shame he doesn't do breaststroke."

The production of rum is a big thing in Puerto Rico and no doubt the country's population of about 3.5m will be downing some of it to celebrate a first Olympic medal.

It came after the unseeded Monica Puig, 22, beat Angelique Kerber 6-4 4-6 6-1 in the women's singles final at Rio 2016.

Reigning Australian Open champion Kerber, 28, simply could not match the intensity of her younger opponent in the deciding set.

There have been few medals as hard won as the keirin silver that Becky James picked up last night.

The 24-year-old won gold in the event in the world championships in 2013, but in early 2014 had cervical cancer treatment after a routine smear test turned up abnormal cells.

A knee injury followed. And then shoulder surgery. Until she finally was able to get back to full-time training.

“Over a year ago I started my full-time training back and I was barely getting through a full week. So to think where I was a year ago and where I am now, I would never have imagined it," she said.

Adrian Trott might just be the proudest dad in Britain today.

His daughter, Laura, earned a record third Olympic gold medal on Saturday night.

“She wants to be a winner, but doesn’t actually count the wins," Adrian told BBC Radio 5 live.

"She’ll just continue with that big happy smiley face that she’s got.”

Laura’s fiancee Jason Kenny competes in the men’s sprint final against fellow Team GB member Callum Skinner later today. Adrian said: “Last night, in jest, his mother said 'what sort of offspring they might produce – most likely a concert pianist'."

Britain's Andy Murray got a code violation during his semi-final with Kei Nishikori but won 6-1 6-4 to remain on course to win back-to-back Olympic tennis gold medals.

The Scot will play Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's gold-medal match (19:00 BST) after the Argentine beat Spain's Rafael Nadal.

Murray, 29, is attempting to become the first player to win two Olympic singles titles.

"It's obviously not an easy thing to do, that's why it's never been done before," said Murray about the prospect of another gold medal.

"I'm going to give my best effort and I'm happy I'm guaranteed the medal, but the goal is obviously the gold."

The Olympics delivers plenty of heart-warming tales.

Occasionally though it throws up some contrast to that feel-good feeling.

The United States' defending decathlon champion Ashton Eaton had to defend himself on Twitter after he copped criticism for wearing a Canada cap as he cheered Canadian wife Brianne Theisen-Eaton to bronze in the heptathlon last night.

    Over to you Ashton.
