Britain's Max Whitlock advanced to the final of the pommel horse - the event in which he won gold four years - ago.

His team-mate Joe Fraser wowed on the horizontal bar, but Japanese hero Kohei Uchimura crashed out.

Over in Sapporo, Great Britain's women's football team made it two wins from two with victory over hosts Japan. Manchester City's Ellen White scored the winner and her third goal of the Games.

In tennis, two-time singles champions Andy Murray is through to the second round of the men's doubles with his partner Joe Salisbury, but Heather Watson is out of the women's singles.

On the road - including a climb of Mount Fuji - there was disappointment for Britain as Geraint Thomas first crashed, then retired from a race won by Ecuador's Richard Carapaz. GB's Adam Yates finished ninth.

From the pool to the Sea Forest Waterway, where two-time Olympic champion Helen Glover and her partner Polly Swan made hard work of qualifying in the women's pairs, but the GB men's four - looking for a sixth successive gold - eased into the final.

In the pool, Adam Peaty started the defence of his 100m breaststroke title by reaching the semi-finals. He was joined by British team-mate James Wilby, while Max Litchfield is through to the final of the 400m individual medley.

Vito Dell'Aquila's taekwondo gold was the last medal action of the day, so let's recap what you might have missed elsewhere throughout the day.

Team GB head coach Hege Riise: “We are all happy with two wins now. It puts us in a good position, able to rest players and recover well. We are very happy.

"We put Sophie Ingle in more as a defensive player against Japan. I think that worked well.

"Of course attacking-wise we lacked a little more. But we knew that could happen. I feel like the connection has got better and better each game and that’s what we need to get used to.

"That will be during the tournament as well. In the second half we changed the formation a little. We came out well and controlled the game much better."

There's one last medal up for grabs today as Tunisia's Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi takes on Italy's Vito Dell'Aquila in the men's 58kg taekwondo gold medal contest.

Lucy Bronze is so good getting down that right hand side into attacking areas, she pushes defenders back.

Put the ball into the box and there is no one better than Ellen White to sniff out opportunities and we saw that with the goal.

She got across the defender, anticipated it, was brave and it's a fantastic finish.

From that great result for GB women's football team, to a win for GB's men in the hockey against South Africa.

Goals from Sam Ward, Liam Ansell and Jack Waller gave them the victory.

You want to top the group, you want to play third place rather than second-place in the Dutch and Brazil group.

Beverly Priestman the Canada manager will know a lot of these players very well having been an England assistant under Phil Neville.

So, it's a big job for Team GB but they are good enough to win that game against Canada on Tuesday.

Team GB will want to play better and they will need to as the tournament progresses.

But in tournaments you need to win and they've got three points on the board, six points and they are through to the quarter-finals and that is the main thing when they go back into that dressing room, that they've qualified.

It's fantastic for Ellen White.

It was the timing of the goal, it's so difficult to mark that.

She comes across the front of the defender and for the defender it's really difficult to see the run and see the ball.

Here's the goal from Ellen White that made it two wins from two for Great Britain in the women's football.

Ross Quinn: Good win by Team GB there. Got it done but I'd rest a few against Canada. Players like Little and White need a rest.

The final whistle blows and it's job done for Great Britain.

Ellen White's goal is the difference and Hege Riise's side reach the knockout stages with two wins from two.

Hosts Japan are still searching for their first win of the Games.
