Nine years have passed since Lizzie Deignan, then Armitstead, was Britain's first medallist in a torrential downpour at the London 2012 Olympics. It's fair to say there's been plenty of water under the bridge since then.

The Rio results sheet shows she finished fifth but the experience was about way more than the final result. In the run-up to Rio, Deignan was facing a one-year ban from the sport for missing three drugs tests.

The decision was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Deignan was free to ride - but not free from conjecture. "It was horrific to be accused of being a doper when it was the very last thing I would ever do," she told BBC Sport.

"It was hard to have yourself so publicly questioned. Lies can be written, and you have no control over it."

    Women's road race

The women's road race is just about getting under way.

The Dutch could and should win it. The difficulty comes when trying to predict which one of their all-conquering quartet will top the pile.

Amongst their number is Annemiek van Vleuten. Remember her? She was the Rio race leader poised to take gold only to suffer a sickening crash which saw her break bones in her back and spend 24 hours in intensive care. Incredibly she was back riding, and winning, the Tour of Belgium a month later.

Van Vleuten is as tough a talker as she is a rider. She has been outspoken about the Tokyo 2020 road race quotas. The women's race features just 67 riders compared with 130 in the men's. "That is just discrimination," she said.

Will Good: The Brits I’ve seen so far are looking very nervous and like the world is on their shoulders!! We needed a first medal of any colour today but it won’t come until Peaty tomorrow!

Jordan Dias: No other way to spin it then a really bad morning for Team GB at Tokyo 2020. Long way to go, plenty of other medal chances ahead, but Jones going out is a body blow, minutes after Murray.

Hayden Paul Davis: This is going to be Team GB's worst Olympics in terms of medals for over 20 years. You heard it here first.

Who is Kimia Alizadeh, Jade Jones' conqueror?

Five years ago in Rio, she became the first Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal with -57kg bronze, standing alongside champion Jones on the podium.

Her 16-12 defeat of Jones today was not the first win she has recorded over the world number one, beating her en route to bronze at the 2015 World Championships.

But remarkably, today's fight was Alizadeh's first at international level since 2018.

She fled Iran in 2020 and the Iran Taekwondo Association has refused to allow her to represent another nation. She is competing for the Refugee Olympic Team in Tokyo.

Double gold medallist Andy Murray was due to start his singles campaign today after an impressive opening day win in the doubles yesterday, with partner Joe Salisbury. The news came earlier in a statement from Team GB - and it was something of a shock.

He had said just a few days ago that he felt he was in with a chance. In today’s statement he said he was really disappointed but had to take the advice of his medical staff.

He was on good form yesterday in the doubles and he and his team clearly feel that is his best chance of securing a fourth Olympic medal.

Jade Jones' chance of becoming the first British woman to win gold medals as three successive Olympics is over.

However, she may still have the chance to battle for a bronze medal later.

Olympic Taekwondo includes a repechage, which means all those who are beaten by fighters who reach the final are given a second chance.

Murray had been upbeat about his prospects after an excellent doubles victory with Joe Salisbury on Saturday. But he has a muscle strain and was advised to compete in one competition only.
