Gilmore was knocked out of the Olympic competition in the third round

There's been a shock in the women's surfing after seven-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore was eliminated in the third round.

The Australian was one of the favourites for gold but it wasn't to be at Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach.

She said: "There’s so much build-up to this, it being such a historical event for surfing - just to even qualify for the Olympics was such a battle.

"This is the world’s biggest sporting stage. You want to show up and do your very best.

"I'm super disappointed that I couldn’t make it happen, but there’s always Paris [in 2024].

"I’m only 33 and there’s plenty of amazing female athletes who get up into their forties. Look at Serena Williams, she’s still doing so well. So there’s plenty of time.

Adam Peaty admits he is missing his supporters in the crowd and say Tokyo 2020 "does not feel like an Olympics".

"It's very different out there," he added. "It's very strange because you think you can come here and rely on that 'oomph'.

"But there's not many people in the crowd because they're all athletes, coaches and media, which is very different. But I know in the final I'm going to have to try and make my own story up."
