Brownlee's Olympic farewellpublished at 23:14 British Summer Time 25 July 2021

Whatever the outcome, Jonny Brownlee has made it clear that the Tokyo Games will be his last.

The London 2012 bronze and Rio 2016 silver medallist wants to move up in distance to half-Ironman and Ironman.

"I've absolutely loved it but after Tokyo I'll be ready for a new challenge," the 31-year-old told BBC Sport.

"I've been doing the same thing for a long time - the same races in the same places - and although the Olympics has been amazing, I'm ready for a change and if anything, the long distance will suit me more."

This is all taking place in and around the Odaiba Marine Park - a popular urban resort on a small man-made island - where swimming, ironically, is usually prohibited.

The park has a 12.5m-high replica Statue of Liberty and fantastic views of Rainbow Bridge, which connects Odaiba with mainland Tokyo. The venue has a long relationship with triathlon, hosting Japan’s national championships for more than 20 years.

We're about 15 minutes into the triathlon which has settled after a dramatic start which resulted in a false start.

Jonny Brownlee and Alex Yee are in the water at the Odaiba Marine Park along with the rest of the field.

Both have made solid starts, with Brownlee in the top 10.

Typical race durations at this level is one hour 45 minutes broken down as approximately 17 minutes for the swim, 55 for the bike, half an hour for the run and about 90 seconds in transition.

The clock continues to run in transition, making the changeover speed – known as the ‘fourth discipline’ – crucial.
