With 16 medals after five days, CEO of the British Olympic Association Andy Anson has been speaking to BBC Sport’s Dan Roan about Team GB's success.

GB had 12 medals after five days at Rio 2016.

“We shouldn’t compare ourselves to Rio, it’s a different environment and a different Games so we are not getting carried away. It’s a very encouraging start," said Anson.

On the swimming results: “They’re taking it in their stride. They kind of expected it. They have been doing well, getting a lot of athletes into finals and that program clearly has strength in depth. Some sports are in transition at the moment – they’ll be better for Paris – but swimming seems to right now be in a very strong position.”

On Simone Biles and mental health in sport: “It’s significant. We knew this would be a tough Olympic Games for athletes. For someone like her in the heat of competition to be able to back up and say I need to look after myself – she clearly did the right thing."

GB gymnast James Hall speaking to BBC One: "Over the moon and after the last year the uncertainty and not knowing what will happen or where my gymnastics is at. It's refreshing to break into that top eight again - I'm speechless. Credit to Joe [Fraser], he had a couple of mistakes and wasn't far behind me so that is refreshing to see, he is the future.

"The whole thing has been a pleasure - the guys I have been with and the way I've competed, it's just a shame my personal coach isn't here but I know he'll be at home watching with his whole family and I know he'll be proud."

GB gymnast Joe Fraser: "I made a few mistakes along the way, that's gymnastics, mistakes happen and I take it on the chin and try to improve moving into the next apparatus. I tried to put on a show on high bar so to get through that routine was great, it's the first time I've done that routine in a competition. So to do it on the biggest stage in the world I'm very happy with that.

"I'm excited for the parallel bar final, I've got six days to rest and recover and get myself ready for the final - I'm excited. All the top people in the world all fighting it out on the parallel bars so I can't wait."

I can’t quite believe it - Dujardinpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

Charlotte Dujardin after winning dressage bronze to become Britain's most-decorated female Olympian.

“It’s just so surreal," she said.

“People say it, and I can’t quite believe it. Being level with Katherine Grainger was good enough, and now I have beaten her. It’s incredible, and I can honestly say I am proud of myself.

“I knew I wasn’t going to go down without a fight. I wanted to go out and enjoy it, and he gave me absolutely everything.

“To win medals individually and in the team in the last three Games, I couldn’t be prouder. And to do it with a new dance partner, I couldn’t be prouder.

“I was literally throwing him from one thing to another thing, and he just keeps going. What he has done here is phenomenal.”

Silver for GB in men's quadruple scullspublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

Over at the Sea Forest Waterway, GB took silver in the men's quadruple sculls event - the first time they have won a medal at the discipline since its introduction into the Games in 1976.

But it was heartbreak for the men's coxless four, who were unable to continue a golden streak for GB in the event, which stretches back to the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The team looked on course for a medal until the final 500 metres where the boat veered offline, eventually coming home in fourth.

Fiji take gold, but GB miss out on bronzepublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 28 July 2021

    Rugby sevens

It was not to be for GB's rugby sevens who lost out on the bronze medal to Argentina.

The loss represented the end of a difficult journey for the team that got a silver medal in Rio in 2016.

Fiji went on to win the gold medal, pipping New Zealand to retain the title which they won in 2016. Apparently Fiji enjoyed a national bank holiday after that win in Rio, will it become a permanent fixture?

There was plenty to celebrate in the boxing today, with GB's Lauren Price comfortably reaching the quarter-finals of the women's middle-weight and Ben Whittaker also progressing to the quarter-finals of the men's light heavy-weight category.

And it will be at least a bronze medal for Karriss Artingstall who emerged victorious from a split decision in the women's featherweight category and will compete in Saturday's semi-final.

Absolutely amazing routine on the high bar to finish.

He quietly went about his competition, looked very confident throughout the whole thing, there wasn't a moment where you thought he was faltering. All of the guys did so well, none of them faltered really.
