It's interesting that Sam Kendrick's father and coach Scott tweeted earlier today that 'Sam has no symptoms and he's feeling fine' but that tweet has since disappeared.

Members of the Australian athletic team have been identified as close contacts, so they've been tested and they will now have to wait an agonising five or six hours for those results. Some of those are scheduled to compete in the first of the athletics sessions which gets underway at 1am UK time on Friday.

Argentine pole vaulter German Chiaraviglio has tweeted about his first positive test, he says quite simply 'Tokyo is over for me.'

Many other athletes will now be fearing how many more of them will be having to say the same.

Great Britain's James Wilby broke down in tears as he paid a touching tribute to his NHS nurse mother Fiona, disappointed he could not reward the sacrifices she has made with a medal in what could prove to be his last Olympic race.

The 27-year-old qualified second fastest for the men's 200 metres breaststroke final in which he sat third at halfway before fading and finishing sixth.

"Oh God, now you're going to get me emotional," he said. "My mum's been...damn you! There was always someone that was going to get it, it was either going to be one of my team-mates or one of you guys.

"My mum's been putting in such a shift for me over the last 27 years and that's probably the main disappointment which is I know I've made her proud, but I haven't quite won the medal I would liked to have won for her.

"She's been working as a nurse, giving out vaccines recently, to an extent which makes me so proud of her and for what's she done for me and my brother over the last quite a few years."

Abbie Brown, speaking to BBC Sport after GB's dramatic opening pool A victory over the Russian Olympic Committee: "It wasn't pretty. Sevens isn't pretty.

But actually, it's our fight, it's our heart, it's our desire to get the ball back and when we have it, keeping the patience.

"We've kept people on their toes - I'm sure my mum and dad aren't going to be too happy at home! Huge fight from the girls. I'm so proud of them.

"First game back after a long time out, it's always going to be a bit nerve-racking, a bit tense. I think we showed great fight out there."

Japan’s Kei Nishikori, who won bronze at Rio 2016, is aiming to stop Novak Djokovic's attempt of winning a 'Golden Slam'

We're getting down to the business end of the five competitions, that's what is happening.

It is semi-final day in the women's singles, with Switzerland's Belinda Bencic facing Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan before Ukrainian fourth seed Elina Svitolina takes on Czech former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova.

In between those matches on Centre Court, Serbia's world number one Novak Djokovic plays home favourite Kei Nishikori in the men's singles quarter-finals. Russian second seed Daniil Medvedev and German fourth seed Alexander Zverev are among the others in last-eight action.

There is a slightly later start at the Ariake Tennis Centre today after the International Tennis Federation (ITF) moved the start of play to 3pm local time (07:00 BST).

Djokovic and Medvedev had been among the players asking for the change, with matches previously beginning at 11am in Tokyo and taking place in stifling heat and humidity.

Helen Glover and Polly Swann spoke to BBC Radio 5live after finishing fourth in the women's pair, narrowly missing out on a podium place.

On the race, Helen said: "We knew it was always going to be a tough final to be in, getting here was a tough route and so I think we knew we'd crossed the line having spent everything. Looking back on the way we got here we are pleased, it shows our hard work.

"We didn't account for the Canadian's going out so well in our lane to the left and I think that helped shape the rest of the race for us because yesterday we beat them and today they had a good start so that probably shaped how we rode the rest of the race."

Polly added: "We always knew people in this Olympic final would come out hard and that was the case and we probably thought we might have had more of a buffer at the front end but it wasn't to be. The way we've attacked this project has been exceptional, I couldn't be prouder of Helen. It has been a special ride."

Earlier today there was confirmation from the coach and father of pole vault world champion Sam Kendricks that the American has tested positive for Covid and will not be able to take on Armand Duplantis in a keenly-anticipated final.

"Sam isn’t sick and we aren’t worried about him," said Scott Kendricks.

"The testing system is very rigid over there. The Japanese officials won’t allow for another PCR test for 6 days so the competition will be over. Sam is in the quarantine hotel where he hopes to at least work out in his room because the season isn’t nearly over! Life is full of tests and we will pass this one."

Great Britain's Tommy Fleetwood has rolled in a birdie put at the thirteenth, from around about eleven or twelve feet.

That now takes him to two-under par and helps him climb the leaderboard. He's within six shots of the Austrian leader Sepp Straka round in 63, who's setting the pace at eight-under-par, two shots clear of the field.

Paul Casey, the other British hopeful, hit a bogey-free 67 which bodes well for the remaining three rounds. Picking up birdies at the fifth, the seventh and the eighth. He's in sixth place as it stands at the moment at four-under-par in the clubhouse.
