Reigning pole vault world champion Sam Kendricks of the United States has been ruled out of the Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19.

He won Olympic bronze in Rio five years ago and had been expected to contend for another medal in Tokyo.

A straightforward fight but [Frazer Clarke] has given himself away there. He looks exhausted - and he shouldn't be. He's only done nine minutes!

Part of that has to be relief. From 2010 to 2021, it's a long time for a dream to get closer.

He's had taste of Olympic glory today and there's plenty more to cone.

Britain are battling well as they try to get back on terms against the third-ranked Dutch, but can't find a leveller before the half-time break.

Adam Dixon and Zach Wallace both have shots saved by the Dutch keeper.

Remember: all is not lost for Britain if they lose this penultimate group match.

A win or draw would guarantee GB’s place in the quarter-finals with a game to spare. If Canada and South Africa both fail to win, GB would go through even with a defeat.

Another 10 metres and Katie Ledecky would have had it. Katie probably had a little bit too much to do in the end but she was so close to touching her out! China just held on.

What a race. China take the gold in a new world record.

Junxuan Yang, Muhan Tang, Yufei Zhang and Bingjie Li, take a bow girls.

The USA, anchored by Katie Ledecky and Australia, who were thought to be unbeatable over this distance, also broke the previous world record.

    That was stunning.

Good workout for Frazer Clarke, who gets under way with a comfortable victory.

The British super-heavyweight went through his full repertoire of shots against Ukraine's Tsotne Rogava. He wins a split decision (4/1).

    Never in doubt really.

Dutch take the leadpublished at 04:47 British Summer Time 29 July 2021

    Great Britain 0-1 Netherlands

Bad news for Great Britain. The Netherlands have just scored a superb goal - a demonstration of skill, vision awareness and movement - to carve open the British team.

A flick over the top of the British defence was delicately taken down before an intricate move was finished off at close range by Thierry Brinkman.

That came a few minutes after GB were unable to convert any of two penalty corners.

Another swim and another win for Duncan Scott. He reaches the 200m individual medley as the second quickest over the semi-finals.

The 24-year-old broke the British record at the Olympic trials in April and is the current world number two in an event he probably doesn't even regard as his strongest.

He looked in fine fettle there.

The hooter goes on the first of the 15-minute quarters in the men's hockey match between Great Britain and the Netherlands.

No goals but suspect the British lads won't be too unhappy with that.

Britain are looking to get back to winning ways against a Dutch side ranked third in the world after a sobering 5-1 defeat by Germany on Tuesday.

A win or draw would guarantee GB’s place in the quarter-finals with a game to spare. If Canada and South Africa both fail to win, GB would go through even with a defeat.

With intense heat and humidity at the Oi Hockey Stadium, it is time for plenty of water down the neck and ice towels on the head.

What a morning's knock by Austria's Sepp Straka.

The world number 161 leads the men's golf after sinking eight birdies - and not dropping a shot - in his opening round of 63 at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.

Straka, 28, has a two-shot lead over Belgium's Thomas Pieters, who is also back in the clubhouse, and Mexico's Carlos Ortiz.

Great Britain's Paul Casey is three under after 13 holes, although home favourite Hideki Matsuyama - the Masters champion, of course - has dropped back to two under.

Fellow Brit Tommy Fleetwood has just birdied the sixth to go one under, where he is alongside Irish pair Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

"When I saw the time I thought I was out, so I was really happy to see that I was in eight. I knew it was going to be tough coming back this morning and trying to go faster, but I've got a day now to reset and come back tomorrow.

"It's just that transition from heats to semi-finals: trying to get to sleep, get a good night, come back the next morning and try and go faster. I'm just going to reset, have a look at the video and sort out that finish for tomorrow."

Imogen Grant & Emily GrantImage source, Getty Images

Imogen Grant, who finished fourth along with Emily Grant in the women's double sculls, speaking to BBC Sport: "In a lot of ways pretty much everything went to plan.

"We knew it was going to be exceptionally tight. We knew the other crews have exceptionally high standards. We knew we were going to execute our race plan as best as we possibly could and find another gear if we could.

"And to be honest, all those things went to plan. It just wasn't the outcome we had hoped for. As with an Olympic final, my legs felt like they were going through treacle in the last few strokes - and that's where we probably might have lost it. But ultimately that means we emptied the tank completely."

On missing out on an Olympic medal: "I'm sure it'll will sink in. At the moment, I'm just trying not to puke too much! Trying to make sure I don't pass out - all the really visceral feelings.

"Being at an Olympic Games is about more than just a medal. It's about where you have come over the last two years from out medal in 2019. Obviously we were hoping to come away with a medal here, but ultimately I'm really proud of what we have done."

The longest-serving member of the GB boxing squad finally gets his Olympic chance.

Frazer Clarke had to watch on as Anthony Joshua won gold in 2012 and Joe Joyce silver in 2016, but says he has learned from his time sparring with them. “I’m like a sponge, drinking it all in. There’s no shame in that, there’s things I can copy like how he lives the life."

The 2018 Commonwealth champion faces Ukraine’s Tsotne Rogava (04:36 BST), who is a multiple world champion in the kickboxing discipline of Muay Thai.

You can see at the end the relief for Caeleb Dressel. He knew it was going to be tight.

The press back home and the swimming world are going 'you're the new Michael Phelps'. There is expectation from the American press.

When we covered the international swimming league, he's all about the team and his team-mates, he plays his part.

He is the new Michael Phelps to me. But he has to back it up - which he does.
