More from Max Whitlock: "Going out first, if you speak to any gymnast they will tell you going out first is really difficult. I had a couple of options for my difficulty, being first up takes away every single option of that. That means I have to go all out and and lay down a good score, because I couldn't watch other people's scores and tailor my routine to what people had done. That was my biggest routine, I have been training for and for it to pay off, first up, it is huge pressure.

"I wasn't fussed about the result, it was more I had done the job, scored nearly my target score, I couldn't do any more, if someone beat it they beat it, I done all I could do.

"As a youngster growing up I would never believe I would win six medals. I done the sport because I enjoyed it, I had fun going into the gym and that is the reason I am still here doing what I do. I do think that is the reason I have been able to get these results.

"I think it has been a crazy rollercoaster for anyone involved in gymnastics, if you take covid for a complete scenario the whole world has been through it and as a country we have pulled together. As gymnasts we have done what we could, in a build-up where just over a year ago we were stuck in our homes. From pommel horsing in my garden to Olympic gold medal."

'I feel absolutely lost for words'published at 11:59 British Summer Time 1 August 2021

    Men's pommel horse

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Max Whitlock on BBC TV: "I feel absolutely lost for words, I can't even describe the feeling and I feel completely overwhelmed, it feels surreal. Team GB have been doing absolutely incredible, the gold medals have been flowing in and I just wanted to do the same thing. To come out here and get my own, I feel very proud.

"This is the probably the most pressured environment I have ever been in, this morning I really felt that. I have always said that chasing is always easier than retaining and I have learned that throughout my journey and I feel fortunate to be in this position. But I am only getting older and experience pays off in a situation like this. I am just incredibly happy and thankful for the journey we have been on to get here. It has been a crazy one I can't quite believe it."

Great Britain's Reece Prescod on his false start and disqualification from the men's 100m semi-final: "To be honest it's just my fault, I’m not going to shy away from it, not going to blame anything, or make an excuse for it.

"I’m a professional athlete. I shouldn’t have false started – I was amped up, I was really, really amped up.

"I’m upset because I feel I’ve let my country down a little bit and I’m very big on high performance and high pressured environments, I’ve always done well so it’s a bit upsetting for me.

"But I’m not going to make an excuse I’ll take it on the chin, and I’ll be back rest of the season, and I’ll make sure I return for the world champs and be on fire."

It's tough as an athlete once you have five Olympic medals and already Olympic Champion to then go and maintain that world class performance but he's done it again today.

Mark Burt: Max Whitlock came into the final ranked 5th, up first and absolutely crushes it. Such bottle, such peerless skill. Faced loads of curveballs coming into these games and still delivered. A true Olympian.

    Men's 100m semi-finals

China's Su Bingtian is the fastest into the 100m final with a time of 9.83 seconds. There are a raft of fast finishers behind him too with American Ronnie Baker taking second in the same time and Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs third in 9.84 seconds. He will take one fastest loser spot.

And South Africa's Commonwealth champion Akani Simbine fourth in 9.90 will take the last one.

Which means Trayvon Bromell, the fastest man in the world this year, will miss out on the final.

'He'll be able to do that pommel routine until he's 62'published at 11:38 British Summer Time 1 August 2021

    Men's pommel horse

    Nile Wilson
Rio bronze medal winning gymnast on BBC Radio 5 Live

I knew he wanted to focus on the pommel.

He looks after himself so well, he's 28 and he will absolutely carry on to Paris.

He's had zero surgeries which is fortunate for gymnasts, he's just so healthy.

Honestly he'll be able to do that pommel routine until he's 62.

He so smart in his preparation and training, he'll be going on for years to come. I predict another two cycles.

Bromell waiting on losers' spotpublished at 11:36 British Summer Time 1 August 2021

    Men's 100m semi-finals

A little yelp of triumph from Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes after winning that second semi-final in 9.98 seconds.

There will be an awkward wait for American Trayvon Bromell though.

He is the fastest man in the world this year, with a time of 9.77 seconds. He was well off that though today. He was edged out down into third and a time of 10.00 may not be enough to get one of two fastest loser spots into the final.

Britain's Reece Prescod definitely won't be there after being disqualified for a false start in the first semi-final.
