49er finals delayedpublished at 06:14 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

The start of Monday’s Olympic sailing programme has been delayed as organisers wait for winds to pick up at the Enoshima Yachting Harbour.

The venue was supposed to host the final two opening series races in the men’s and women’s 470 classes, as well as, from 06:30 BST, the medal races in women's and men's 49er class.

The weather forecast published by World Sailing early on Monday morning predicts that winds will remain light at four to six knots until the early evening.

World Sailing has previously said that winds of at least six knots would be necessary to ensure fair competition.

Athletics gold for Greece & Puerto Ricopublished at 06:09 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

There were two gold medals awarded in track and field overnight.

In the women's 100m hurdles final, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won Puerto Rico's first ever athletics gold, edging out America's Kendra Harrison (12.52) and Jamaica's Megan Tapper (12.55).

"For such a small country, to give little kids hope, I'm just glad I'm the person to do that," Camacho-Quinn said afterwards.

And, in a dramatic final round of the men's long jump final, Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou claimed gold with a final jump of 8.41m.

That mark tied him with Juan Miguel Echevarria, however Tentoglou took gold by virtue of his second-best jump on the day being longer than that of his Cuban rival.

Two sides to this Olympic coin my friends...

A little earlier, Juan Miguel Echevarria was left beating the ground when injury hampered him as Miltiadis Tentoglou won long-jump gold.

    Greece has a new hero.

The pair shared the same 8.41m leap but Tentoglou took gold because his second best jump of the day was longer than that achieved by Echevarria.

India have beaten Australia, who had been looking for their first medal since winning in Sydney in 2000, 1-0 in the quarter-finals.

The Hockeyroos won all of their pool matches for the first time, and conceded just one goal, but it's all over for them in Tokyo.

Great Britain face Spain in their quarter-final at 13:00 BST.

    Women's floor final

American gymnast Simone Biles will not take part in today's floor final, and she is yet to make a decision on whether she will compete in the beam final on Tuesday.

Biles’ withdrawal did, however, mean Britain's Jennifer Gadirova was promoted from first reserve to join twin sister Jessica Gadirova in the final.

Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari was top qualifier, ahead of Americans Biles and Jade Carey and vault champion Rebecca Andrade of Brazil.

    Women’s team pursuit qualifying

Last week, Charlotte Dujardin became Great Britain's most decorated female Olympian by winning bronze in a tense individual dressage event.

Though that brought an end to Dujardin's run of successive Olympic titles from 2012 and 2016, her haul of three gold medals, one silver and two bronze moved her clear of the five medals won by rower Katherine Grainger and tennis player Kathleen McKane Godfree.

Laura Kenny could claim that title in Tokyo, as she contests the team pursuit, omnium and Madison events in the track cycling - beginning with women’s team pursuit qualifying this morning.

China’s Wenwen expected to dominate the +87kgpublished at 05:18 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

    Women's +87kg

While the focus has been on Laurel Hubbard, the favourite for gold is China’s world record holder Li Wenwen.

The 21-year-old set three landmarks in the snatch, clean and jerk and total to retain her Asian Weightlifting Championships title in April - and the gap between her and the silver medal weightlifter at that event was a huge 56kg.

Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Emily Campbell won European Championship gold in April. No British woman has ever won an Olympic weightlifting medal.

  17. weightlifting

Who is Laurel Hubbard?published at 05:14 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

    Women's +87kg

Laurel Hubbard was a junior national record holder and lifted a total of 300kg in domestic men’s competitions.

However she quit in 2001 at the age of 23. "It just became too much to bear... the pressure of trying to fit into a world that perhaps wasn't really set up for people like myself”, she said.

In 2012, she came out as a transgender woman and resumed her weightlifting career.

Since returning to competition, Hubbard has won seven international tournament gold medals. She will be the third oldest lifter in Olympic history at 43.

At Tokyo 2020 her world ranking suggests she is an outsider for the medal positions in the +87kg category.

New Zealander Hubbard set to make historypublished at 05:10 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

    Women's +87kg

Laurel Hubbard is set to become the first openly transgender athlete to compete in a different gender category to that which they were born at an Olympic Games.

Her selection has sparked debate. The New Zealand Olympics committee says Hubbard is a “really important role model” who “opens up a conversation about inclusivity”, while some of her fellow competitors have welcomed the move.

However critics, including some athletes, have questioned her inclusion. A key aspect has been around whether Hubbard carries an advantage due to going through male puberty. Many of the scientists and academics cannot agree on this point.
