Muir aiming to 'kick-start' period of successpublished at 01:30 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

    Women's 1500m heats

    Nick Hope
BBC Sport Olympics reporter in Tokyo

Great Britain's Laura Muir is hoping that securing the first major medal of her career at Tokyo 2020 will "kick-start" a period of sustained success.

The 28-year-old Scot won European 1500m gold in 2018 and has consistently attained podium finishes indoors.

But she was seventh at Rio 2016 and has finished fourth or fifth in each of the last three World Championships.

"I keep getting so close and it's so hard, but I know it's in me," Muir told BBC Sport.

"Hopefully, when you get one then all of a sudden they start to come. There's a lot of major events backed up for next year and to kick it off with an Olympic medal would be brilliant."

    Worthington's historic 360 backflippublished at 01:17 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

Five years ago Charlotte Worthington was rolling burritos, now she's wrapped up one of the most remarkable moments in BMX history.

The 360 backflip had been the holy grail in the women's freestyle division, having never been landed in a competition before - until now.

Just 30 minutes after hitting the deck with her first attempt at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Team GB's Worthington nailed it with her second try, bike and body spiralling like a gyroscope before letting the tyres hit the ground.

"Charlotte has opened Pandora's box and there's another level. It was a huge gamechanger," said BBC Sport commentator Jon Taylor, a BMX rider who has invented numerous tricks himself.

  7. Team GB's medal haul falling behind London and Riopublished at 01:12 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

    Simon Gleave
Head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote

After nine days of Olympic competition in Tokyo, Great Britain has 32 medals including 10 golds. The number of medals is down on both Rio 2016 (38) and London 2012 (37) but the next two days should bring Tokyo closer again. Rio and London were Great Britain's best Olympics since 1908 but Team GB look like falling short of those heights this time around as the 10 golds won so far fall well short of London's 16 and Rio's 15 at this stage.

  8. Team GB ahead of forecast Tokyo medalspublished at 01:08 British Summer Time 2 August 2021

    Simon Gleave
Head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote

Team GB's 32 medals are now eight ahead of the number our pre-Olympic Virtual Medal Table forecast had at this stage. We have therefore adjusted our projected British medal total upwards to 60, including 16 gold medals as the number of golds is also two ahead of schedule. At this stage, it looks like Great Britain could finish fourth on total medals, ahead of host nation Japan. A few more gold medals will be required to finish that high on the gold-ordered table though. The current Gracenote forecast of 16 for Great Britain would almost certainly mean fifth place on the final medal table.

While we're on the topic of yesterday's athletics, this was pretty special too.

With victory already sealed, she soared out to 15.67m on her final attempt. Take a look at this...

    What a moment this was.

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi decided to share gold following an exhausting two-hour competition.

The pair couldn't be split after recording best clearances of 2.37 metres, and though the athletes were offered an opportunity to take part in a jump-off they agreed to share the title.

Italy enjoyed a wonderful night in the athletics on day nine, as Lamont Marcell Jacobs claimed a shock gold in the Olympic 100m final.

That followed an incredible high jump final, which ended with Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi sharing gold with Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim.

    More on that shortly.

After Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes was disqualified for a false start, Jacobs, a long jumper until 2018, won the 100m in 9.80 seconds - ahead of American Fred Kerley and Canada's Andre de Grasse.

Showing the confidence that makes him the world's best, Whitlock went out first and delivered a near-perfect routine that earned him a score of 15.583.

It was then a nervous wait for the the 28-year-old, but he had done enough to deliver his third career Olympic gold and second in the pommel horse.

That, alongside two World Championship titles, makes him the all-time most successful gymnast in the event.
