More from Pearne-Webb, when asked to sum up the achievement in spite of challenges: "This cycle has not been too much of a rollercoaster because there’s not been many highs. There’s a few girls here that experienced the massive high in Rio and I think after winning and achieving the ultimate dream, that in itself is the biggest challenge and to bring a group of girls that have watched that all together, as you said there have been so many challenges, I can’t even recall them all and that is collectively as a team and so many individuals as well.

"It’s been tough for everyone back home the past 18 months as well. The girls in our squad including myself haven’t seen our families in over a year. We’ve been locked down, Christmas on our own because we want to come here and want to give as good a performance as we could.

"Olympic Bronze even a few months ago was in our wildest dreams and I’m so proud of the whole squad, the whole support staff, everyone that’s been involved that we’ve come away with something from here."

'We still had belief'published at 05:36 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

    Great Britain 4-3 India

    Team GB

Great Britain captain Hollie Pearne-Webb, speaking to BBC Sport after they won bronze: "Don’t know what to say. Obviously incredibly proud of the whole squad – the 16 people that are going to get a medal here. We have got three girls that are here as reserves that aren’t, and they deserve one. We’ve got players at home that weren’t selected. We very much rely on our whole squad, there’s 26 girls in the squad but there’s so many more that have been part of it over the past five years. I wish every single one of them could get a medal. They deserve one. That’s why we’re here – that’s why we’ve achieved it.

"It’s been a tough five years and I couldn’t be prouder of them all. We’re all here because we still had that little bit of belief deep down and there’s been loads of time over the years where we’ve doubted we could achieve this and I’m just so pleased and proud that of everyone that we have."

Bronze medal for Great Britain! The gold in Rio 2016, now the bronze in Tokyo. The celebrations start.

Heartbreak for India, they were unable to emulate what their men achieved 24 hours ago.

Great Britain can enjoy the moment. The huge disappointment from the semi-final loss to the Netherlands is replaced by joy.

Three in a row for GBpublished at 04:44 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote: "Great Britain (G1-S0-B3) wins its fourth medal in women's hockey and its third in a row, after bronze in 2012 and gold in 2016.

"Laura Unsworth is the first British hockey player in men's and women's hockey to win three Olympic medals.

"Great Britain's 4-3 win against India in this bronze medal match equals the record for most goals in any bronze or gold medal match in women's Olympic hockey. There were also seven goals in the bronze medal match in 1992, when Great Britain beat Republic of Korea 4-3 after extra time."

'Strong, athletic, intelligent Indian women role models across their country'published at 04:39 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

    Great Britain 4-3 India

    Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE
Olympic gold medal winning hockey player on BBC TV

For Indian women generally, in quite a traditional patriarchal society, we're seeing Indian women thriving, being the very best versions of themselves that they can be on a global stage.

Strong, athletic, intelligent, bright women really doing amazing things. They are role models across their country.

Although they've finished fourth and they'll be so devastated, what is success? There are more elements of success here. Take that home and celebrate it as a group.

'There'll be sixteen players on the podium, but that bronze is for everyone'published at 04:32 British Summer Time 6 August 2021

    Great Britain 4-3 India

    Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE
Olympic gold medal winning hockey player on BBC TV

It's not just about the players there, it's about the players back home - I'm going to get emotional again...

Some who have played a role in this five year cycle, some that have been injured in the lead up to this and couldn't fight for their place, all those players and staff - everybody matters. Everybody has value and they all played a role in getting that bronze medal.

There will be 16 players on that podium, but it will be about every single person in that squad. That's the reason that they're there.

    Great Britain 4-3 India

    Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE

GB managed the pressure phenomenally well, managed the clock and were clinical when they got their chances. I'm really pleased for that team.

India are so dangerous on the counter attack and they're so lethal on penalty corners, so Great Britain had to be so diligent and they were.
