Eliud Kipchoge made it look so easy, so comfortable. He beat the field, he beat the conditions and some of the experts as well.

For Kipchoge to come here when the cracks in his invincibility had started to show is a phenomenal piece of racing and a lesson on marathon racing.

Men's marathon
On a long straight through the 40km mark and Eliud Kipchoge has the road pretty much to himself, just the car that follows the leader with him on there.
Gold is in the bag, only uncertainty now is who else joins Kipchoge on the podium.
Men's marathon
Just over 3km to go and Eliud Kipchoge now leads by almost 30 seconds. Ultimately effortless stuff from the defending champion.

You can quickly fall apart in the marathon, even with just seven kilometres to go if you have overcooked it.

Sadly Callum Hawkins has joined a group of around 20 runners who have had to withdraw. It underlines just how impressive Eliud Kipchoge is as the tough conditions takes its toll on others.
Men's marathon
How!? How is it even possible as Eliud Kipchoge does the latest 5km in 14:27. Stunning stuff from the Olympic champion.

Rohan Kallicharan: Possibly decisive break by the master. He can beat the field in so many ways and he has just looked so comfortable today. What a runner Eliud Kipchoge is.
Freddie: Kipchoge is a genuinely unbelievable athlete. Deserves to be a household name alongside Phelps and Bolt in my opinion.
Paul Pickersgill: Away and clear another relentless turn of the screw from the master gold and Olympic history awaits the class of eliud kipchoge
Men's marathon
Just got a view from behind what was the leading group and Eliud Kipchoge is rapidly becoming a dot on the horizon. Must take all your mental strength not to just give up when you see him suddenly call upon that reserve of energy and scamper off.

You can be in the shape of your life and settle into a slow pace. It is like that muscle memory kicks in and then it can be hard to get out of it.
Whether you are trying to run a fast time or as fast as possible, you have to know your body very, very well.
What you are doing in a marathon is walking a very fine line between as fast as you can go and maintaining that to finish. Or slightly overcooking it and not being able to finish.
Men's marathon
Into the last 10km and Eliud Kipchoge leads by almost 10 seconds. Unless there is a late charge it is looking like the current champion is going to defend his title.
Callum Hawkins, the highest placed Brit, is dropping off quite a lot. He was 50th for a long while but now down to 80th.
