The first rider across the line gets one point, second gets nothing. Only the first person gets a point and then at the end of the race you add up all the points and you get ranked based on that.
This could favour someone going on a long breakaway or someone sprinting.
The trouble is you have to be sure to win, it is a test of endurance as well as tactics

Jack Carlin saw the danger, but he had to respond and make space and Carlin ended up sandwiched and a little touch could have caused a serious crash.

In the points race at the end you can gain 20 points for a gained lap, so Laura Kenny can be a significant number of points down on her main rivals going into the last race and if she puts in a blinder like we know she is capable of doing she will be fine.
