So, how have today's results affected the Super League table?

Well, Leeds are two points clear at the top after their win at Castleford, helped by second-placed St Helens losing at Wigan.

The Warriors are third for now, although Huddersfield will move ahead of them again if they beat Salford in the day's late kick-off. A Salford win would lift them from ninth position into the top four.

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham told Sky Sports: "I'm so proud of my players, they're so resilient. We've lost two more players today and you've got to swap all your team round. Some of those forwards have played such big minutes and I'm proud of them. We didn't attack that great, but we didn't have any half-backs. All I wanted today was a performance and that's what I got from my team - true grit and determination."

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane told Sky Sports: "It's a good feeling. That was win at all costs. I've got a lot of respect for Keiron Cunningham and his team and that's what makes this victory a bit more special. They're a class team but I was impressed with my team. We showed a lot of determination in defence. That was the real Wigan."

St Helens forward Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook told Sky Sports: "We're bitterly disappointed. We played as a unit - we've lost some key players. We can only learn. We lost last week [at Hull KR] but we came back and put in a good performance this and obviously it wasn't good enough, but I know that we'll get better, get players back and push for honours again."

"Wigan are back in the race, it was what we expected. They're a champion side, with a great coach. We expected they would come good at some stage, they're good defensively and they got attack going today as well."

Wigan half-back George Williams told Sky Sports: "That means everything. What a win that was. It was really tough but the middles dug deep. St Helens gave us a tough match. We targeted these Easter games and I'm really buzzing. I'm from Wigan and I love this."

It's all over, and in front of 24,057 supporters, Wigan and St Helens have treated us to a superb contest.

It's Wigan who come out on top by eight points, but all 34 players on show have given us a special, special game.

"It has been a brave effort by both teams and it was a tremendous tackle by the full-back Ryan Hampshire, Adam Swift tried to put the burners on but he matched him for pace."

Ryan Hampshire - take a bow. Once your Wigan team-mates have stopped hugging you, that is. Adam Swift looks, for all money, to be streaking clear down Saints' left but Hampshire grabs hold of Swift's feet and drags him into touch.

And the chance disappears as Tommy Makinson chases a kick through and catches Ryan Hampshire a little high. Penalty to Wigan, who should see this out now.

Inside the last five minutes, and time is slipping away for St Helens, but wait - Joe Burgess spills the ball in a dangerous area and Saints have a scrum 40 metres out.

A must-score for Saints, this, really.

Wigan are on the charge again but Lee Mossop is prevented from touching the ball down by the referee's whistle, as Phil Bentham signals a forward pass.

Wigan's Joe Burgess has scored in his last four derby appearances against St Helens. His Grand Final try last October counted for nothing. Today, he's probably confirmed his side's victory.

"It was very skilful from Joe Burgess and a very skilful kick from George Williams, At eight points it's a massive mountain to climb for Saints. I can't see Saints scoring here, even if they do get the ball they haven't looked like scoring."

Warriors prop Lee Mossop grounds the ball - inches short. Three tackles left for Wigan, it's swept out to George Williams, he kicks through to Joe Burgess and it's a try!

Superb finish from the young winger, who just about keeps his feet in the field of play as he grounds the ball.

Ryan Hampshire kicks from the touchline, and that could be the game.

Saying that, the players are exhausted. They've given everything. It's going to take something special, or a mistake, to settle this one.

Maybe that was the error, as Greg Richards runs the ball on the final tackle and runs into a cluster of Wigan defenders 30 metres from his own line.

    Big chance.

"That was the big chance for Saints [through Dawson] they threw everything at them, they never looked like getting through and it was great defence. At the moment it seems like a shut out defensively."

After last season's Grand Final between these teams, rugby league found itself in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Well this match, the first Wigan-Saints derby since that October encounter at Old Trafford, will hopefully put it in the news for the right reasons.

What a match. What a way to promote Super League.

All we need now is a grandstand finish.
