Well it's a familiar feeling for England rugby league fans at the moment - a narrow defeat by a New Zealand side inspired by Shaun Johnson.

But it's not all over. Wins over Scotland and Australia should be enough to take England into the Four Nations final.

It's a number of years since England have beaten Australia, but we're going to do it at some stage. Why not this year? We have the quality in this team to win.

Widnes head coach Denis Betts, one of England's coaching staff: "I think it was a great Test match, a fantastic stadium and crowd and a great contest against a side that is a fantastic team. 

"Wayne Bennett has just said in the changing rooms this is the start of the journey. Everybody's effort was high but we were a little bit dumb at times. Sam (Burgess) came off the field and knows in his heart that there are certain things we could do better.

"The big challenge for Wayne and the coaching team is getting players to make less mistakes that are costly at this level. We are looking at a small picture, we have a game next week and we are already in preparation for that."

More from Australia head coach on facing England boss Wayne Bennett: "We have got a pretty good playing group, very supportive of me and the playing group and so we will just worry about what we have to do, make sure we do everything right.

"I imagine Wayne will do the same. I have huge admiration for Wayne Bennett, he had a huge influence over me when I was a young kid and I hugely respect him."

We didn't play the Aussie way or the Kiwi way, we played the English way and threw the ball about.

We won that second half 12-11.

Australia head coach Mal Meninga: "I thought both sides tried hard. Obviously England got off to a fantastic start and New Zealand hung in there and kept on working hard for each other.

"There's plenty of improvement from both teams. The Kiwis have been working hard for a number of years, they keeping hanging in there and working hard for each other - their goal-line defence was particularly good.

"England will improve, their forwards will improve. They probably didn't play direct enough, they probably played too laterally. Maybe that's one of Wayne Bennett's tactics, but you have got to go direct and earn the right through the middle before you go wide."

New Zealand head coach David Kidwell: "It was an outstanding performance, both teams need to hold their heads high, that's what Test match football is about.

"There was a lot of hard work and we have to make sure we prepare right for next week. The most pleasing thing was our defence, that's something we stand for.

"I thought England came out firing and we knew we had to build up our sets and make sure we had a high completion."

Here's the moment that won the match... Shaun Johnson's drop-goal after 65 minutes, which proved to be the difference as New Zealand beat England by just one point.

Shaun Johnson was incredible with his last plays. He was happy forcing repeat sets and building pressure. 

The way he controlled the game for New Zealand just set him apart today.

Mike Lloyd: Johnson's kicking was outstanding, just have to do it the hard way now I guess.

Thomas Roughley: Positives. But lack of composure in last 15 mins. Missing an organiser, a calming influence like a Sinfield.

Mark Adamoulas: Big ups Johnson. Let's not hide behind the fact England could have won handily, but guys buckled under pressure.

England captain Sam Burgess: "We probably lost that game ourselves. We showed resilience in defence and gave ourselves a chance, but it's an empty feeling at the moment.

"There's belief in this squad, we're taking it day by day. We'll rest up, recover tomorrow and then attack the week as it comes."

New Zealand's match-winner Shaun Johnson: "We knew coming here, the home support, how good they are and the quality of players, we were in for a tough game.

"We were able to score a try and turn it around at the back end of the first half, we hung in there under immense pressure. It was a massive effort from us and a great start our campaign. 

"To play against a great nation like England and in front of the hostile crowd you get here is a privilege."

It's tough to lose to a 65th-minute drop-goal.  We had opportunities. The battle's lost but the war's not over. It's still all there for us.

At the crucial times, New Zealand made the right decisions and showed a bit more experience than England did.

It's a losing start to the Four Nations for the hosts, who must win their last two matches against Scotland and Australia to reach the final at Anfield on 20 November.
