    England 10-12 New Zealand

A slight delay while the video referee takes a look at an appeal for a New Zealand try, but Jermaine McGillvary forces his opponent into touch.

Still plenty of life in this match.

    England 10-12 New Zealand

It's so much fun watching Shaun Johnson play rugby league. An amazing grab of the ball from around his ankles by the New Zealand half-back, followed by a superb grubber kick and England try-scorer Jermaine McGillvary is tackled in goal by a Kiwi chaser.

Sam Burgess is taking a breather on the bench, but expect to see the England captain back for one last push before the end of this one.

    England 10-12 New Zealand

New Zealand are about to lose Thomas Leuluai to injury for a while - he's gone off with a head knock and will undergo a concussion check.

His half-back partnership with Shaun Johnson is a key one for New Zealand.

Meanwhile, England have Daryl Clark on for Josh Hodgson at hooker.

The passing hasn't been as crisp as it should have been. You've got to put it in front of the player and little things like that are crucial at this level.

That came from the repeat set that Josh Hodgson got. When New Zealand have to defend, they don't look half as good as they do when they've got the ball in their hands.

    Jermaine McGillvary, Gareth Widdop goal

A lifeline for England from Jermaine McGillvary, who takes Elliott Whitehead's pass and juggles the ball before diving over in the corner to score on his home ground.

Gareth Widdop bisects the sticks with his kick at goal and England are back to within two points.

Purple Tentacle: Well, that's pretty annoying. England causing their own downfall here. Need more accuracy.

Danny Myers: By eck, some work to do now England...

Rae: Another inept and unintelligent performance by England. So much for the southern hemisphere coach changing things.

    England 4-12 New Zealand

England could do with a quick response here, after the setback of conceding a try to Shaun Johnson in the second minute of the second period.

Josh Hodgson's good kick is dabbed behind for a goal-line dropout.

"A chance to build pressure," says Iestyn Harris on BBC One.

They will be disappointed there, England. They had a great opportunity and it was a well-executed play, but Shaun Johnson did a fantastic job to read the play and got himself in between the two attacking players.

He's no slouch, but a it's a little bit of a gimme there for the Kiwis.

    Shaun Johnson, Jordan Kahu goal

Shaun Johnson was England's World Cup heartbreaker in 2013 and, three years on, he's put England into a very difficult position in their Four Nations opener.

The New Zealand half-back intercepts Gareth Widdop's pass and races 70 metres to the try line.

The worst possible start to the second half for Wayne Bennett's men.

5 November: England v Scotland & New Zealand v Australia

The Four Nations continues next Saturday with a double-header at Coventry's Ricoh Arena, and you can follow both matches live on BBC Two, Radio 5 live sports extra and on the BBC Sport website and app.

England's first competitive game against Scotland (17:30 GMT kick-off) precedes a repeat of the last World Cup and Four Nations finals - New Zealand v Australia (20:00 GMT kick-off).

We're done yet for today, however. Will it be England or New Zealand who make a winning start? The second half is almost upon us.

I'm still worried. We've probably had a 10-minute stretch of being very comfortable but we have to keep our discipline and keep it going.

While there's a break in play, let me bring this remarkable rugby league tale to your attention...

Jack Smith was a touch judge in Australia's Four Nations win over Scotland yesterday, six years after he almost lost his life.

The former Royal Marine was shot by a Taliban sniper while serving in Afghanistan in 2010 and he suffered multiple injuries which required many months of rehabilitation.

Smith's career as an amateur rugby league player were over, so he began refereeing and earlier this month he was added to the Rugby Football League's full-time panel of officials.

England probably enjoyed the better of the first quarter but you have to credit the New Zealand defence - they managed to scramble, turn up and stop the play.

New Zealand enjoyed most of the field position after that and the scoreline is reflective of the game. I think the turning point was when Chris Hill and James Graham left the field.

Both coaches will be happy with the contributions from their teams and it could go either way.

    Kevin Sinfield
Former England and Leeds captain on BBC One

England started well but it was a half split in two. New Zealand had 10 repeat sets to England's five. As the game grew, New Zealand created opportunities.

At this level the game is about pressure and field position and towards the end of the half New Zealand started to win that.

    England 4-6 New Zealand

Referee Robert Hicks brings the half to a close and New Zealand have a narrow lead.

Kiwi forward Jesse Bromwich tells BBC Sport: "We started off pretty sluggish but we ended the half really well. If we can complete our sets in the second half, we'll go a long way to winning the match."

    England 4-6 New Zealand

Elliott Whitehead comes to England's rescue with an acrobatic interception to quell any New Zealand threat.

Josh Hodgson kicks late in the England tackle count and that should just about be that in the first half.

  20. Postpublished at 38 mins

    England 4-6 New Zealand

Another Shaun Johnson kick on the last tackle creates more carnage near the England try line and they are forced to defend another set with two minutes of the half to play.

The momentum is firmly with New Zealand now.
