Salford make their first semi-final in 19 years and it's a huge fillip to head coach Ian Watson that he has delivered a big event to the club.

Just 80 minutes separate the Red Devils from Wembley now, but holding onto their challenge on both league and cup fronts will be a test of squad depth and character for the next six weeks.

Wakefield's cup run comes to an end but there's still plenty to play for in Super League, and they will be hopeful that their absentees return to fitness sooner rather than later.

There are three more ties to come of course after tonight's match up.

Leeds Rhinos, winners as recently as 2015, welcome Featherstone Rovers to Headingley tomorrow night. It will get underway at 20:00 BST with commentary from BBC Radio Leeds.

On Saturday, two of Super League's off-colour big guns look to lift their seasons when Warrington Wolves host Wigan Warriors. That one goes off at 15:00 BST on BBC One.

Last but certainly not least, holders Hull FC take on league leaders Castleford Tigers on Sunday in a mouthwatering tie. Kick-off is at 1500 BST on BBC Two.

Wakefield head coach Chris Chester told BBC Radio 5 live sports extra:

"We looked clueless for most parts of that game. Completion rates were abysmal and we got what we deserved.

"We're out of bodies. Adam Walker shouldn't have played tonight and we're down to 16 fit players.

"I don't want to use any excuses. Salford were by far the better side tonight and were worthy winners."

Salford are a threat with the ball and when they defend like that they are going to be a tough side to stop.

They have got a lot of guys who are playing the best rugby of their career and it's a real challenge for sides to stop them.

Salford forward Mark Flanagan told BBC Radio 5 live sports extra:

"I thought we were outstanding, especially in that first 40 minutes. We knew we had to come with an aggressive mentality and it was a really good team performance.

"We did the basics right tonight. In the last few weeks our completion rates haven't been as high and we've probably been a bit soft in defence.

"This has probably been the best performance since the start of last season and it's a really happy dressing room. When confidence is high and you're playing well, there's no better place to be."

As the terrace chant goes, Salford ARE rising.

Second-place in Super League, in large swathes of the season they've been hugely dominant in attack and they defend hard with some big boppers.

They deserve a big audience, they'll get that in the Challenge Cup semi-finals as they come under the national focus in the most prestigious club competition in the world.

At times it was very, very good and then a bit scrappy but the end result is Salford go into the semi-finals.

They did the damage with five tries - Ryan Lannon, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Niall Evalds, Greg Johnson and Craig Kopczak all crossing for Ian Watson's side.

Liam Finn's reply was a rare moment to cheer for Wakefield who looked a shadow of the team that has put them in touching distance in the top four.

Shame this game is ending in a flurry of scrappy phases.

Salford have done what they need to and just want the hooter to go to secure their spot. Wakefield will want shower, food, bus. Off.

What kind of finish are we going to have here? Salford rip-snorting score to send through with a flourish or Wakefield clawing a few points to restore some pride?

Salford not quite going through the motions, they are still have a pop but they don't need to push it.

Another sweet kick gets another drop out. Salford just toying with Wakefield now.

Wakefield run out of ideas on that last set.

I spoke to Michael Shenton at Castleford this week, who admitted it's hard to keep up the intensity when you're hammering a team.

The same could be said for Salford tonight.

Wakefield have spent a lot of time going sideways.

When things aren't going your way and your gameplan isn't working you get into bad habits and try things you shouldn't.

Salford hold Wakefield out, but that was more encouraging from Trinity.

Still well down on the board but this is a purple patch for the Trinity. Ish.

Salford ended a set with an uncharacteristically poor kick. And Wakefield made it pay.

If this was a boxing match, Wakefield would have thrown the towel in by now or the referee would have stopped it.

We've got 25 minutes or so left of this... it is one of those where you think 'Can't we just stop it? Surrender perhaps?'.

This is rugby league and it's ruthless and brutal. Beautiful many times too.
