Salford are unstoppable. They look controlled in what they are doing, everyone is on the same page.

Salford are winning this game at a canter - Wakefield look blown out of the water and it doesn't look like a game between two top-five teams.

Thirty points up for Salford after one of their powerful forwards Craig Kopczak clatters over the line.

Robert Lui switched the angle of the attack again and the Wales prop scorched through to score.

All came off a Wakefield mistake then as Mason Caton-Brown instinctively played at a poor Rob Lui kick and what was going to be a Wakefield scrum went the other way. Fate.

Salford pressure, Salford points have been coming throughout the game.

You couldn't see Wakefield stopping Salford scoring in this second half.

It was a stupendous pass from Ben Murdoch-Masila out of the back of the hand to Greg Johnson and I believe there are plenty more points to come.

GAME OVER. I'll eat some big humble pie if not.

Salford work a lovely move to the right, Robert Lui putting Ben Murdoch-Masila through a hole on a short-ball and he raced into space.

Wakefield scrambled well but BMM then flicked a nonchalant pass into the path of Greg Johnson who raced across the stripe. Celebrations behind the posts, they have one foot in the semi-final.

Interesting to see Craig Huby kicking on the last for Wakefield. Not sure that's the plan for success. Wasn't that bad a kick actually.

Michael Dobson hoists up a teaser on the last in the subsequent set and Wakefield have to drop out AGAIN.

Salford's pack have done a great job up front in dominating and getting on the front foot but you still need the link players and there are a host of players ready to step up and dictate.

It says a lot about Robert Lui and Michael Dobson and their combination that they can leave Dally M winner Todd Carney on the bench.

Throw in the emerging Kris Brining, and Logan Tomkins out of dummy half and the Red Devils can hit and hurt teams from anywhere.

They're not the only ones suffering a glut of injuries by any means but Wakefield do have a significant chunk of salary cap spend looking on from the plastic seats rather than stood in the defensive line.

From a Trinity perspective you'd like to have seen lads like big David Fifita running in and testing Salford, but he's not available and the other props need to step up.

It's been a composed, aggressive and energetic performance from Salford.

Everything they have done has been clinical, they've moved the ball, challenged Wakefield and scored points - it's been the near perfect performance from Salford.

Salford, by some way, have been the better side and Wakefield have some serious thinking to do at half-time.

    John KearImage source, SWPIX.COM

Few people have as many chapters written in the history of the Challenge Cup than the man above - John Kear - who's sat up in the stands with Wakefield's coaching staff.

It was the inspirational Kear who led Sheffield Eagles to upset the form book in beating Wigan in 1998, the same for Hull's Cardiff triumph against hotly-fancied Leeds in 2005 and he was even involved as assistant coach at Castleford when Mal Reilly's side won the 1986 final against Hull KR.

Kear's arrival at Wakefield from Batley in 2017 to take up a head of rugby role has coincided with a push for the Super League top four, and of course progress to the last eight of the Challenge Cup.

He and Chris Chester have some big work to do to sort this one out though...

The hooter cannot come soon enough for Wakefield Trinity. They have been outgunned and out-thought by the Red Devils.

No points to show from a disappointing first-half for Trinity, Salford in control.

When Niall Evalds gets the ball in hand, he's a dangerous runner.

His agility is incredible. He stepped off his left, stepped off his left again and showed the power to get to the line.

That is Niall Evalds' strong suit and the reason he's in this side.

Salford might just have booked their semi-final place, even with 40+ minutes remaining.

Lovely sliding move to the left found Niall Evalds chiming into the line and with Wakefield expecting the ball to continue out wide, Evalds checked back in with excellent footwork to dance his way across.

On this evidence so far, Wakefield will be going out of the cup. Sorry Trin fans.

    Jon Wilkin

Wakefield have been relatively toothless. They've not had a lot of ball but when they have they've made errors, although you have to credit the Salford defence.

Wakefield need half-time. If Salford score again you can't help but feel the game is out of reach.

    Salford 14-0 Wakefield

Trinity are getting chances here but their past two sets have ended in an unforced error.

Salford look content and unruffled, even when Wakefield are slugging it out before them.

There's been no space for Wakefield's speedy backline to have a go so far, and their forwards have failed to get over the top of their opposite numbers.

  20. Postpublished at 33 mins

    Salford 14-0 Wakefield

Craig Huby's sleight of hand to Kyle Wood is perhaps the best thing of the night so far. Sensational skills.

Wakefield put on a couple of shifts wide but lose the ball in the end of the set and Salford can just clear their lines on their next six-tackle phase to pin the visitors back in their end.
