That is the power of Ben Murdoch-Masila. He's not been hugely effective with the ball and he hasn't had a lot of possession, but he runs aggressively at the third defender to make this kind of play very effective.

Michael Dobson did a great job on the inside - he went hard into the line to stop the Wigan defence. But Murdoch-Masila was the threat - he's a huge asset for Salford.

Salford have endured a lot so far but they're getting back into this game now.

    Greg Johnson, con Michael Dobson

Penalty, penalty, try. That's the adage. And Salford make it ring true.

Greg Johnson finishes the try off in the right corner, after the ball went through the hands of Michael Dobson, Todd Carney and Niall Evalds. Big finish.

    Converted by Dobson. Game on.

    Wigan 12-0 Salford

Salford get a penalty for a Wigan flop, compounded by a bit of dissent which buys the Red Devils 10 metres.

They need to make these chances count as they've not had a true threat on the line yet.

    Big opportunity now.

    Wigan 12-0 Salford

Salford got inside the Wigan 10 but brute strength was not enough to put them through.

Wigan stood up to the assault. More craft than graft needed there.

First quarter gone and it's Wigan who are enjoying themselves in the Sunday sunshine.

    Wigan 12-0 Salford

Wigan have started this one like a train.

They could be even further in front had Tom Davies' foot stayed in play here in the third minute...

For once Salford get the ball cleanly but in no real territory to speak of. They get to half way before winning a penalty.

This is a chance to get some field position...

It's been an exceptional five or 10 minutes for Wigan. They've played with speed, have enjoyed loads of run-ins, and then they put pressure on Wigan with the last kick of the set. That's important because it drains energy and it's where the hard-work began for this try.

  9. try

TRY Wigan 12-0 Salfordpublished at 16 mins

    Willie Isa

Brilliant try from Willie Isa but it's the hands from George Williams that set it up on the back of some dominant forward play.

Salford look shattered, Williams' pass to Isa was so succulently, beautifully, crisply fed in to his hands he scarcely believed he was going into score. But he did. And Wigan are in total control.

    Wigan 8-0 Salford

Wigan turn Salford round and force another goal-line drop out from Tommy Leuluai's kick.

They'll get another set of six and the territory that goes with it. Tough times for the Red Devils.

    Wigan 8-0 Salford

At times Wigan are on Salford before they've had time to set their line, the ruckspeed is rapid. That's what is keeping them on the backpedal.

Salford have a rare completed set and put Wigan back on their 10 but Tom Davies rips forward with it. Just a temporary halt to the raid on Salford's line...

Wigan are punching holes in Salford's defence and it's all too quick for them. This isn't how Salford want to defend - they want to get numbers in defence and slow Wigan down. At the moment, Salford's defence is too unorganised because of Wigan's speed of play.

George Williams gobbles up the easy points on offer to nudge Wigan further ahead. Smart gameplan.

    Wigan 6-0 Salford

Salford need to get through some sets, calm down and regroup.

Wigan have played this first 10 minutes cutely and they are on top on the board and on top in terms of the flow of the game.

Sam Tomkins almost gets to the line... cutting run straight through the middle. Salford struggling to cope and concede a penalty! All Wigan!

George Williams stripped the defence there. The winger and centre were tucked off the edge of the defensive line, waiting for a kick that never came. The result was Wigan found space. After Salford's vigorous start, Wigan have controlled the early stages of this game.

TRY Wigan 6-0 Salfordpublished at 7 mins

    Oliver Gildart, con George Williams

It's been coming. Wigan get to the 20 metre line with tackles in the bag and once in range they worked Salford over beautifully.

George Williams mesmerised their defence on the last, and instead of dribbling a kick through, popped a perfect pass to Oliver Gildart to steam through a gap to score.

    Converted by Williams. Wigan lead.

    Wigan 0-0 Salford

Wigan pinned back by good last tackle kick by Todd Carney. Salford desperate to clear their lines.

However they cough up another penalty in Wigan's attacking set and the Red Devils are pinged by James Child. Danger again...

Wigan put together a classic shape to the right hand side mixing up out the back and flat passes to work the overlap from that scrum...

However, the crucial ball to Tom Davies is chalked off for forward pass. Again denied!

Salford being pressed hard out of defence by sterling Wigan defence. Somehow still 0-0.

Manu Vatuvei is a powerhouse taking carries out of defence in yardage but then he spills the ball in contact. Took a whack and is being bandaged up.

    Pressure right back on Salford!
