We spoke about England's back three of Lomax, McGillvary and Hall before the match - and they delivered. They got them out of trouble well and also looked dangerous at other end.

England had the better of the second half and created some good opportunities. I hope England fans don't just look at the score and think 'ah, we only scored one try' - there was some good attack play. England really took it to them.

England captain Sean O'Loughlin: "Both sides were a little bit rusty - and there will be a lot of improvement from both sides.

"There is a lot more in us - we are disappointed by the defeat but can take a lot from it.

"I thought everyone had a real dig tonight - we had some patchy periods but I thought the effort was good from everyone."

Australia full-back Billy Slater said: "We were prepared for a tough battle and we got that, we were a bit scratchy in attack, there is improvement to make but it was a good start.

[On the link-up between Cameron Smith, Slater and Cooper Cronk] "We've played together for 17 years, we have those plays up our sleeve. We just need to hold the ball, build pressure and get them tired for those to come off.

"England's strengths are their back-three, their wingers are hard to handle, they shift the ball and make you defend. They're a good side and they'll go well in this competition."

Far less doom and gloom about the England performance after a spirited second period but Australia, the holders, make a winning start to their defence of the Paul Barriere Trophy.

England were exceptional in terms of their desire and determination but at the end were undone by Australia - relentless and dogged.

Their big game players did enough to take the points. No shame in that 80 minutes though for the England players. They will go again.

Short kick-off by Gareth Widdop falls for the Kangaroos. The Green and Golds will be celebrating at this rate, but they'll know they've been in a game.

Australia knock on close to the line to gift a scrum to England. They're desperate to set the scrum and go again.

Wade Graham was tackled by Elliott Whitehead and the ball was deemed to have been stripped. PENALTY. Gutting for England.

Australia penalty. Cam Smith slots it. Eight point, two score lead. Might be game over that...

Ryan Hall goes for the corner but the big man with a penchant for tries against Australia is shepherded out by immense defence.

England have been excellent after the break. This is encouraging. A score would just make it even sweeter!

England's Sean O'Loughlin leads by example to drive his way through the middle, then James Graham. Luke Gale's kick earns England another dig after Australia drop out.

That was a very big decision....

Michael Morgan chased through the kick and knocked the ball out of England full-back Jonny Lomax's hand. No penalty for the Aussies.

The decision was no-try (after a lengthy visit to the video referee), and the reward for England is a 20-metre tap.
