This is where Wayne Bennett is going to earn his money. We're going to see if he'll leave a legacy on English rugby league.

Looking at that second half, I wonder, what is our DNA? In the first half, I know it's big men carrying the ball.

We won't beat Australia with five drives and a kick and a 95% completion rate. We need to play our way.

    Ian Millward
Former St Helens coach on BBC Two

Some of the tries were breathtaking.

But Australia can compete for 80 minutes. That's why they're favourites.

So have we seen anything in the group stage performances that suggest England can win this World Cup?

    The BBC pundits aren't convinced...

  5. 'McGillvary takes pressure off forwards'published at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

    Jon Wilkin
Former England international on BBC Two

Jermaine McGillvary's biggest value add is the pressure he takes off the forwards. That's the most valuable thing.

Some of the tries he scores, a lot of modern wingers could score.

The positional requirements of a winger have changed. You need instinctive finishes, but McGillvary provides power and punch.

  6. 'McGillvary the stand out winger'published at 12:19 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

    Kevin Sinfield
Former England and Leeds captain on BBC Two

Jermaine McGillvary has been the stand out winger in the competition. The tough carries he takes from our goal-line, nobody else is doing that. And he's scoring tries.

  7. 'I just took a knock'published at 12:17 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

England winger Jermaine McGillvary: "I just took a knock, but I was all right to carry on. Wayne Bennett decided to take me off, but I'm OK.

"I try my best to help the big forwards. It is always nice to score, even better to win.

"The first half was definitely better than the second half. This tournament is about consistency and I think we are getting better every game.

"Hopefully we will get to the final and then put it all together."

Talking of Jermaine McGillvary. The England winger looked to be hobbling at one point in the second half, although he did power through a hoard of French defenders to score his second try of the game after seeing the physio.

Wayne Bennett then brought the Huddersfield man off. Presumably as a precaution?

    Anyway, here he is...

  9. 'Wayne's eyes on next week'published at 12:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

    Kevin Sinfield
Former England and Leeds captain on BBC Two

I think Wayne had his eye on next week. How often do you see a winger subbed? That shows how important Jermaine McGillvary is to England.

I'm going to be ultra-positive. England have left me wanting more.

  11. 'A lot of rotation, a lot of disruption'published at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

England's Kevin Brown: "I'm really pleased, it was my first game for a while and my first for England for a while.

"I was really happy with the first half, but we put some ball down in the second half. There was a lot of rotation, a lot of disruption, we need to tidy it up but I'm more than happy defensively.

"I love playing with Luke Gale, a little general, a pleasure to play alongside."

Job done for England then, but did the players coming in to the team do enough to secure a place against Papua New Guinea in the quarter-final next week?

Kevin Brown is one of those hoping he did...

Richard Leaman: Ending the game with a half back playing at full back, a half back/full backplaying left wing, a 2nd rower at left centre, a half back playing at right centre, and a centre at right wing. Against Australia we would be ripped to shreds!

Matthew Stankiewicz: Another major sporting tournament where England leave the group stages not knowing their best team.

Anthony Bailey: Considering we finished the game with a full back and centre on the wings, a stand off at centre and a back row at centre not overly concerned there.

  14. 'A lot of second-half errors'published at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

    Iestyn Harris
Former Great Britain and Wales international on Radio 5 live sports extra

It was a game of two halves.

The first half was imaculate and efficient. England will have gone in at half-time feeling very happy.

In the second half after Jermaine McGillvary's try, there was a lot of errors and the players looked like they felt they had done enough for quarter-finals.

  15. 'It's a learning curve'published at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

France skipper Theo Fages: "We are proud to wear the shirts and represent France, so this year is a bit disappointing for us, we were looking to do better than we did - especially today.

"We started poorly and against England you cannot do this.

"It is a learning curve for us. The speed of reaction, the skills, it has been fantastic to play against amazing players. We need to learn from these games."

  16. First and second halves 'chalk and cheese'published at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

    Jon Wilkin
Former England international on BBC Two

The discipline with the ball in the second half was chalk and cheese compared with the first half.

In the first half they played with execution and tempo. In the second they came up with errors and tried to change how they were playing.

    Wayne Bennett will be disappointed.

  18. 'We need an 80-minute performance'published at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2017

    FT: England 36-6 France

England full-back Gareth Widdop: "We just need to put in an 80-minute performance. The first half was really good, but second half we kept turning ball over which we can afford to do.

"We moved the ball around and scored a few points - the key is doing it for the full 80.

"It's been a while since I pulled the number one jersey on, you get to roam around the field more, it's certainly enjoyable."

On facing Papua New Guinea in the quarter-final: "They are a great team, it will be a tough challenge, but it's about what we do, doing our job individually.

"If we do that, we'll get the job done."
