England were in survival mode there and both sides of defence were terrific. The pass down the sideline from Michael Jennings to Jason Taumalolo was sublime - but England got back in numbers.

Job done so far for England.

Jermaine McGillvary and Gareth Widdop have scored England's tries, in what has arguably been their best half of the tournament so far.

They're 40 minutes away from a first World Cup final since 1995 - although don't write Tonga off.

They were 16-2 behind against New Zealand in the group stage, but came back to beat the Kiwis.

Sam Burgess is bringing Lolohea all sorts of nightmares. He doesn't know what to do - am I staying back or coming forward?

England have effectively made Tonga defend back-to-back sets on their own line.

Kevin Brown should probably have looked to kick there, given how forward the Tongan defensive line was. It would have taken some steam out of the Tongan charge but his pass through James Roby nearly caused some problems for England.

James Roby drops the ball from a rather iffy pass and Tonga attack again.

Daniel Tupou and Michael Jennings combine again but there's a swarm of white shirts to prevent Tonga getting their first points.

England's defence has been exceptional today. Absolutely exceptional.

I think the jury was out among England fans when it came to Gareth Widdop as an England player - after his previous performances. But he has been a revelation this tournament - he has been terrific.

    Better from England.

Gareth Widdop kicks low under real pressure and Will Hopoate knocks on.

Widdop, moved from half-back to full-back during the course of this tournament, is becoming increasingly influential for England.

A Tonga hand prevents Sam Burgess from a run to the line, and England have another scrum 10 metres out.

James Graham tries to find Tom Burgess 10 metres out, early in the tackle count, but it's not the best pass and Burgess can't hold on.

    An opportunity goes begging.

Captain Sean O'Loughlin, who is taking a break having just been replaced, doesn't look happy with that on the touchline.

Tonga are bringing it forward with bruising intensity - that was a real test of their sixth tackle play and they put pressure on Jermaine McGillvary. Kevin Brown worked hard to get behind the ball but there were five England jerseys there, compared to three Tongan ones. England piled on the pressure to make sure it didn't fall into Tongan hands.

England survive once more, as a combination of Jermaine McGillvary and Kevin Brown collect a high kick.

Tonga are building some momentum - an important eight minutes to go before half-time.

David Fusitua - take a bow.

England created a chance down the left and Fusitua took a chance - if he'd missed John Bateman, Ryan Hall was in for a walk in.

He didn't miss. He hit - very hard. Bateman loses the ball and relief for the Tongans.

Off the field, the Tonga fans are beginning to find their singing voices.

If England have got any concerns, it's that they shouldn't give the Tongans open field space to run into. England have had a couple of scrappy kicks that have allowed Michael Jennings to fly out of dummy half and get up the right side of the field.

But England are hanging onto the ball and winning penalties as well: they're winning the penalty count 4-3.

Tonga's evasive running and offload game is wonderful to watch when they get it going.

Successive bursts by Daniel Tupou and Michael Jennings force England to concede another penalty.

They get to within five metres of the England line, but then Andrew Fifita drops the ball. Frustrating for the sea of Tonga fans in Auckland.

England have been very good with their kicking in the first 20 minutes, but their last couple have been a little scratchy under pressure.

If you fly down the line and try and bash England, you might get hurt yourself.

Tonga are just lacking a bit of rhythm in their attack. They don't attack in waves like England do. The danger from Tonga is that if England let one of the big players go, they'll find an offload - but England have been strong defensively all tournament.

My word - Tom Burgess is completely creamed by Siliva Havili and somehow the England man stays on his feet. A huge hit by the Tonga hooker!

England's Luke Gale coughs up the ball and Tonga attack once more, but they knock on themselves.

The clinical nature of England's early play has just deserted them for the past few minutes, but defensively they've been rock solid.
