There's a difference in the quality of kicking at the moment: England have executed their kicks well and put pressure in turn on the players catching for Tonga. Jermaine McGillvary has never been put under any real pressure when he's caught kicks.

It's becoming a little bit harder for the big Tongan players to get behind the ball.

It's about this sort of time that England usually turn to their interchange bench and they have done - Tom Burgess is on and immediately into the action, giving away a penalty 20 metres from his own line.

There's still Alex Walmsley, Ben Currie and the ducking and diving James Roby to come on. Roby may be needed sooner rather than later, as hooker Josh Hodgson is still struggling with that earlier problem.

I really like the positive style England play. They move the ball and are aggressive in defence - it's such a good brand of rugby.

Tuimoala Lolohea is the kind of player who likes to roll the dice but he'll learn to manage that.

One of the key talking points before the game was the relative inexperience of Tonga's half-back combination.

Tuimoala Lolohea kicks the ball dead in-goal, giving England seven tackles to make their way towards the Tonga line again.

But England knock on halfway through that set - it's the first one they've not completed.

Let's not forget: that try came from a game-saving moment from James Graham. There are so many good stories in this England team today: we talked beforehand about Tonga handling the emotion of the game, but England's performance has been riddled with that in the best possible way.

In case you missed it - perhaps it happened before you'd got up? - here is Jermaine McGillvary's opening score.

    England's completion rate so far - 100%. 10 out of 10.

Excellent work from Wayne Bennett's side.

They've just given away their first penalty - John Bateman the guilty party just inside the Tonga half.

That was great play for England - they release Elliot Whitehead on the inside shoulder to find Gareth Widdop to bang the ball on the line. There was no defender on him.

The passes have had to be right on the button for England and Sean O'Loughlin is just showing he is an absolutely world-class player.

Jonathan: Best first 20 I’ve seen from England this tournament. And surprise surprise, no errors. We’d genuinely go toe to toe with Australia playing like this.

    England extend their lead!

Video referee Ben Thaler overrules the on-field official Matt Cecchin, deciding that Gareth Widdop did not make a double movement in grounding the ball.

Some boos from the Tonga supporters. They're not happy.

England are - they're 12 points up and have started very well indeed.

That was thrilling stuff from the Tongans. First and foremost, it was breathtaking: they decided to spead the ball as England piled on the pressure. It became a three on one and I thought they'd score every day of the week.

James Graham was down on his haunches a second ago with no ribs left - and what a chase back that was to thwart Tonga.

Both teams are making breaks in this game.

Now England hooker Josh Hodgson is down receiving treatment.

The two sets of players will be glad of the break, I'm sure. It's been a breathless start.

    What a break by Tonga!

They almost go the full length of the field and it's excellent scrambling defence by England. Stunning stuff.

Somehow England survive, and the referee awards a penalty for England as Michael Jennings is deemed to have passed the ball after a tackle was completed.

It's so hard to brace yourself for contact after you've passed the ball, and that's what's happened to James Graham. I've been impressed with Sam Burgess so far: he has had some strong carries.

It is nice to see England exerting a measure of control and not conceding penalties.

Tonga concede a penalty immediately from the kick-off.

Prop James Graham - who today has become England's record World Cup appearance maker - is down injured and receiving treatment after a strong Tonga tackle.

He looks to be ok, if a little winded.
