Up until that pressure, you would say the momentum was with Tonga. Jermaine McGillvary and Sam Burgess contributed to England getting the advantage: they broke the 'arm-wrestle' wide open and the penalty just relieved the pressure.

    Gareth Widdop

    No mistake from Gareth Widdop.

A big moment - it means Tonga will need to score three times to take the lead.

Those were the first points since the 17th minute, when Widdop converted his own try.

The ball is stolen from Sam Burgess with two Tonga players in the tackle - England penalty 30 metres out.

Gareth Widdop will go for the sticks...

    Tonga 0-12 England

My comment on 44 minutes of this possibly "being England's day" was met with a groan by one of my colleagues.

That's what following England in World Cups can do for you.

I promise I won't say anything else like that to jinx it.

England seem to have settled things after that big Daniel Tupou chance for Tonga early in the second half.

That was some pass from Will Hopoate. Daniel Tupou split the line open and England have escaped.

Tonga are strong ball carriers. If you give them territory they'll find an offload to give them that opportunity.

Paul Brown: Massive second half this... Tonga will be hammering us to try and peg this back. Hopefully England's defence will stay strong.

    What a chance missed!

Tonga created the extra man on the left touchline and all Daniel Tupou had to do was catch the ball.

    Dropped.

You begin to get the feeling this might be England's day. They get a penalty to relieve some of the pressure.

    Tonga 0-12 England

Tonga have made a bright start to the second half, assisted by a couple of penalties conceded by England.

An early Tonga score and the complexion of this semi-final completely changes.

England can't take their foot off the gas for one second. The back half of the first half saw too many errors creep in: if England start this half with too many unforced errors, it will allow Tonga to creep back into this game.

Tonga have really whacked the forward pack but England are up for it.

England have to complete their sets but can't go into their shells. They can't protect the lead - we've seen Tonga can make something out of nothing.

England have to go out and, for the first 20 minutes of this half, do exactly what they did for the first 20 minutes of the first.

England don't need to do anything other than complete their sets and get down the right end of the field. Do that, and they will score points in this half.

You don't play Rugby League unless you thrive on contact. There have been some huge hits in this game. Tom Burgess came on the field and had a huge impact.

The hits do hurt, but, as we saw with James Graham, it hurts more when you've relaxed your body and are less prepared for contact. If England do get through, there will be some sore bodies and recovery will be key. But they have to do a lot here first.

England are so subtle in their skill through the middle of the park. There are so many runners in motion - so many options. We've seen how important that style is for England.

At 12-0, you felt England were in control, although Tonga were playing well. I though they could have kicked on further - Tonga were having chances, but just not converting.

You watch Tonga being threatening and making breaks, but the number of England shirts at the back... The one thing that sets England apart is their attention to detail when it comes to defending. James Roby is always back and we saw an exceptional chase back from James Graham.

Wayne Bennett will probably still be talking about errors, mind. Tonga will want to improve their execution but England will know they could really have buried Tonga if they'd had a better final ten minutes at the end of that half.

I thought the final eight minutes was a worrying time for both sides - they were both making errors. Either side could have scored, and if Tonga had come up with a try... You felt that a try in that moment could have been big. 12-0 is a good score with the way things have gone, but Tonga probably just need to relax a little.

There was a really fast start to that game, with no errors for the first five or 10 minutes.

That's the way England have to play - it suited them down to the ground.

Tonga are a team of power athletes, not endurance athletes. England have to maintain this.
