What a performance and what a tremendous advert for the sport of rugby league that was.

Warrington made history as they scored four tries without reply against a Wigan side who wiped the floor with them only two weeks previously.

Steve Price's Wire go into August's Challenge Cup semi-final double header along with Catalans Dragons and Leeds Rhinos.

Tomorrow, the final semi-final spot will be decided as St Helens take on holders Hull FC.

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane told BBC Sport:

"It hurts more than you can imagine. We got beaten in every department there is. By far the best team won and they deserve to be in the semi-finals.

"I'm disappointing in the manner we went about it. The points they scored and how they scored them is disturbing. It's not the Wigan standard.

"There were two different teams today. I've said that to the players. They're honest but I didn't see anyone at a Wigan standards today.

"It's nothing to do with me leaving, the players are professional and I'm working hard everyday. It's something we need to get our of system and get on with it.

"It's tough and we're better than what we showed today."

Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price told BBC Sport:

"It was our best performance to date. The first half was outstanding. Tyrone Roberts was super today, the way he controlled the game and defended was superb.

"We have a football team here. When you bring a key playmaker from Australia it takes time for them to bed in.

"I'm really pleased with the whole team today. To keep a team like Wigan to zero points is a tremendous effort."

Warrington Wolves wing Josh Charnley told BBC Sport:

"I really enjoyed it. The Magic Weekend was a blip for us and we rectified that in training and we showed the real Warrington Wolves today.

"I said I wouldn't celebrate but when my name got cheered and they booed me, there was a lot of energy and passion.

"It was one of those where I couldn't hold it in."

Warrington Wolves loose forward Ben Westwood told BBC Sport:

"I've been involved in some big games over my career but defensively that was up there.

"We handled them pretty well and we worked hard in training and it paid off today.

"All rugby league players want to win trophies and I'm no different. We're giving it our damned hardest to win another Challenge Cup."

Warrington Wolves prop and man of the match Chris Hill told BBC Sport:

"We got bullied at the Magic Weekend and we didn't play our good stuff but we needed to build on beating Hull last week.

"[On Magic Weekend defeat by Wigan] It's put to bed now and we concentrate on Friday.

"Our first 40 minutes was outstanding but it's the best overall performance we've put out this year."

It's all over and Warrington have nilled Wigan in the Challenge Cup for the first time in 113 years and sealed a first Challenge Cup win at home against the Cherry and Whites since 1936.

Superb stuff.

To add insult to injury, Tyrone Roberts strikes the ball as clean as you like as the Warrington scrum-half slots over a drop goal to add another point to the tally.

Bryson Goodwin kicks a penalty goal as Warrington further extend their lead by two points.

Declan Patton builds pressure and attempts to get into the goal area but Wigan manage to clear their lines and put the ball into touch.

There's a goalline drop-out but the visitors make a mess of it and the Wire win back possession.

Mike Bear: The level of respect in rugby has dropped massively. All players in refs face moaning. Ref has got most things right.

Grammarian: Credit where it is due: Robert Hicks is having an excellent game here. We are always quick to jump on referees for a bad performance - something I am as guilty of as the next man, but Hicks has controlled this game astutely.

Michael MacDonald: Brilliant referee decisions by Robert Hicks in contrast to grimly predictable Wigan and Warrington.

Wigan could be letting their frustrations get the better of them here. On the fifth tackle they're held up and Sam Tomkins kicks the ball away.

Referee Robert Hicks is having none of that and immediately gives Warrington a penalty.

Sam Tomkins tries to get through the wall of blue and yellow Warrington shirts but he meets a brick wall in Kevin Brown.

The Warrington faithful are loving this.

John Bateman is running round like a headless chicken trying to find a way through a resolute Warrington defence.

This is superb stuff from the hosts who've kept Wigan firmly pegged back all afternoon.

It's a dangerous challenge from Thomas Leuluai.

It's called a cannonball tackle and they're trying to stamp it out of the game.

It can cause serious injury and the referee had to make a decision there.

It's a dangerous cannonball tackle and there's no need for that. Robert Hicks gives him his marching orders for a 10-minute breather.

Sam Tomkins loses the ball and it hits the corner marker.

Not only that but he clashes into the pitchside cameraman who falls over in a heap with what looks like a very heavy broadcast-quality camera!

That's gotta hurt.

Ryan Atkins has the ball down for Warrington again, but it's not given as there's a knock-on in the process of Josh Charnley receiving a catch in order to see him through.
