Well that was quite the game of rugby league, but Catalans Dragons held on to beat Warrington Wolves and make history.

It was an enthralling final and one for the annals of time for French rugby league.

Warrington Wolves' Chris Hill told BBC Sport:

"It hurts, the first 20 minutes broke us, we weren't sensible enough and what they did to us was what we wanted to do to them.

"We have got to learn our lessons and got to stick together."

Catalans Dragons chief executive Christophe Jouffret told BBC Sport:

"We dream a lot and I've been involved in this sport for 15 years now and 10 with the club and I didn't think it could be so magic to win at Wembley.

"It's magic for Catalans but also French rugby league. We were struggling in France to show how beautiful this sport is, so a lot of people and politicians have come back to us in the last few weeks.

"It's good to get support from the French president and the match has been shown on TV back home, which is good for us."

The back story is huge and what this will do for the game in general I feel is is massive.

It was like Warrington were going to get at Catalans because they had run out of juice, but they kept doing things that we all thought that they wouldn't and that led to the drama and excitement.

Rugby league has esteemed history in France and this one Catalans fan is happy to hold up a sign that the English can easily identify with.

It was tense, I was on the edge of my seat in the last 10 minutes and I was emotionally involved in the game. You could see the effort that the Catalans Dragons put in and that Warrington wasn't good enough to be in it but the quality of the Warrington defense kept them in the game.

We can't overstate how big a story and result this is for Catalans, French rugby league and rugby league as a whole. It's been a real privilege to be here and watch that piece of history.

Catalans Dragons hooker Michael McIlorum told BBC Sport:

"It's unbelievable. It'll take a while to sink in but it will when we fly back and see the fans in Perpignan.

"The first three or four months of our season was one of the toughest periods of my career but it brought us closer together and we started working for each other and got our rewards.

"We made hard work of it today and kept dropping the ball but thankfully the boys dug in and we came away with a win."

Catalans Dragons' Ben Garcia told BBC Sport:

"It's just unbelievable, I can't wait to lift the trophy and come back to Perpignan."

Catalans Dragons captain Remi Casty told BBC Sport:

"The progression of the club and the team through the 11 years is awesome and a great achievement for Catalans and for rugby league in France.

"Warrington came back well but we never gave up and we kept fighting to win."

Warrington's execution was poor, they had a lot of possession but could't really do much with it.

Catalans' discipline, desire and effort was exceptional and they really repelled everything that Warrington tried to throw at them.

Steve McNamara got it right in the first 60 minutes with the discipline and the game plan but what the last 20 minutes was about was courage, desire and will. They just hung in there and refused to be beaten.

This will hurt Warrington a lot but the game in France will surely benefit from this.

Discipline, game plan and I think consistency was key.

Catalans thoroughly deserved it - they came with a game plan and stuck to it, their kicking game was good and Warrington couldn't get the better of them defensively.

Remi Casty lifts the Challenge Cup trophy and what an afternoon this has been for Catalans Dragons.

They're flying home tonight and have even booked a seat for the trophy!

Warrington Wolves head coach Steve Price told BBC Sport:

"We had plenty of chances in the second half. Credit to Catalans, I thought they did well. They were very spirited.

"It's a disappointing way to go out. We can take a lot of lessons out of the game, certainly the start and the intensity.

"Being able to stick to a plan and play for long periods, we weren't good enough. It wasn't to be."

Absolutely devastating for Warrington Wolves but these Catalans Dragons have earned the Challenge Cup.

Steve McNamara has given a masterclass in coaching because he has turned that club around.

As a reminder, this is the same Dragons side that only maintained their Super League status my winning the Million Pound Game 11 months ago.

Catalans Dragons head coach Steve McNamara told BBC Sport:

"It was incredible for us. We played really well for 55 minutes then nearly blew it. These people have made such a huge effort to come here.

"I'm pleased for them [the fans] and our owners and I'm over the moon.

"It was really tough. They deserve it, they've been through so much, we've been underdogs for so long."

Catalans Dragons full-back Tony Gigot told BBC Sport:

"What a game. This team is unbelievable. We played a tough team The boys have been awesome.

"For the french fans it's beautiful. We worked so hard. You can see today that was not our best game this season but we play as a family.

"It will be a very good boost. All the french players here push and we want to show to everyone we can play rugby league in France."

This is a hell of a day for French rugby league and all the sport has been through.

From near-relegation to Challenge Cup winners. What a year they have had.

Let us not forget that just under a year ago, Catalans Dragons were playing for their Super League status in last season's Million Pound Game.

Fast forward to today and Steve McNamara has masterminded the French side's first-ever victory in the Challenge Cup.

Absolutely stunning and they deserve it. They've been incredible today.
