Salford's last set again ran aground in their own end and Tui Lolohea's kick is again down into Wigan's left edge.

Liam Marshall again prominent coming out of backfield.

Then Liam Farrell busts the line... runs out of options. Salford scramble. Farrell's kick goes to ground, Salford pinch it.

Now the Red Devils are on the rampage.

    Wigan 0-2 Salford

Most of the good work from Wigan is coming from their yardage carries by outside backs, in particular Liam Marshall who sets a big platform with his scurry forward from deep.

Wigan get to a point on the right edge and it looks as though there is a chance on with Bevan French but Chris Hankinson is held up and play hands over.

    Salford 0-2 Wigan

Wigan continue to dictate the pace of this game although limited to their own half on the back of some zippy Salford line-speed.

The kick from Jackson Hastings has depth, but it's down the throat of Rhys Williams.

Wales international Williams is a strong returner of the ball but again, Wigan are swarming and Tui Lolohea is forced into a kick on the end of the set and Bevan French gathers.

  6. PENALTY: Salford 0-2 Wiganpublished at 6 mins

    Chris Hankinson

Chris Hankinson is the man tasked with goalkicking in the absence of Zak Hardaker, and slots it from close range.

  7. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Salford 0-0 Wigan

Wigan really forcing the issue here, as Salford are pinged on the back of another series of big drives.

The visitors are taking the two from the penalty in close range.

  8. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Salford 0-0 Wigan

Try-saver as Wigan whizzed the ball out to the right there, swiftly churning through the metres and Bevan French tries to blast his way through close to the line.

Salford turn the ball over, but another set finds them drowning in a bid to move downfield and Joey Lussick is forced to an early kick out of dummy-half.

Wigan making the running with big carries.

  9. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Salford 0-0 Wigan

Salford's Tyrone McCarthy stays down after taking Liam Marshall's shoulder to the chops, as Wigan return the ball after a routine set from the home side.

It was a case of putting his head in the wrong spot, and there's a bit of manipulation to the shoulder on the back of that.

    Wigan back up and running...

  10. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Salford 0-0 Wigan

The pitch, unsurprisingly, looks a bit heavy and boggy underfoot although there's plenty of green on it.

Wigan belt the ball away through Tommy Leuluai on the back of a patient first set. Handing the ball over in the home side half.

    Lee RadfordImage source, SWPIX,COM

Hull FC's home humbling by Warrington last night came at a price for head coach Lee Radford, who was relieved of his duties in the aftermath of the game.

Seven years at the helm produced two Challenge Cup wins, back-to-back having finally ended the club's wait for victory at Wembley, and the revitalisation of Hull FC as a play-off contender.

However, this season's indifferent and mixed form has brought about his exit, having lost four of the opening seven games.

"He's had a fantastic seven years, one of the most hard-working head coaches I've ever come across," chief executive Adam Pearson told BBC Radio 5 live Sports Extra.

"He's got honesty and integrity, and it's not a decision that gives me any pleasure at all.

"We have a big supporter base here and they need to see entertaining and winning rugby at home."

    Salford v Wigan (19:45 GMT)

Bevan French and Jackson HastingsImage source, SWPIX.COM

It's quite an ominous sign for the rest of the division that Wigan are probably not quite at their peak in terms of form yet, but still top the table with five wins from six.

Adrian Lam's side have won the past four games since a disappointing defeat away to Castleford, with 98 points in the process.

Key to their attacking prowess has been full-back Bevan French, who has been so good that Zak Hardaker has moved into the centres; half-back Jackson Hastings and some brilliance out wide from wingers Liam Marshall and Dom Manfredi.

The combination between Hastings and left-side back-rower Liam Farrell is proving as destructive as his link with Josh Jones was at Salford last year. That will not be lost on Red Devils boss Ian Watson.

They know what is coming, but being able to stop it will be the issue.

  19. Salford struggle to repeat 2019 formpublished at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    Salford v Wigan (19:45 GMT)

    Kevin BrownImage source, SWPIX.COM

One of the most remarkable rugby league occasions of the 2019 season was Salford's relentless demolition of Wigan in their Super League play-off semi-final last October.

Ian Watson's side, spearheaded by a dominant pack and the magnificent prompting of half-back Jackson Hastings, were 28-4 winners at the DW Stadium - reaching their first Grand Final in the process.

Unfortunately for Watson, the loss of Hastings, now with tonight's opponents Wigan, and Josh Jones to Hull FC has taken away two important weapons from his personnel.

There has been some smart recruitment in reply, the experienced Kevin Brown has come in and Seb Ikahihifo has replaced the loss of ballast in the pack.

However, one win from six league games is evidence that repeating their 2019 feats will be tough.

  20. Familiar faces...published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2020

    Salford v Wigan (19:45 GMT)

    Jackson HastingsImage source, SWPIX.COM

Tonight feels a bit like a case of 'Friends Reunited', given the shared histories of the combined squads.

In the Salford team, there's Dan Sarginson, Kevin Brown, Lee Mossop, Gil Dudson and Mark Flanagan who have all worn cherry and white.

Opposing them, Jake Bibby and Jackson Hastings were Grand Finalists at Salford as recently as last October, Dom Manfredi played a loan game at the Red Devils while Chris Hankinson was a Salford player in his early career without ever making an appearance.
