We have the men's game coming up after this one and England prop Alex Walmsley has been talking to the 5 Live Rugby League podcast.

Walmsley says he and his team-mates are expecting to walk into a "lion's cage" when they step onto the field in Perpignan for this one-off Test match against France.

The St Helens prop is predicting a hostile environment and genuinely tough encounter against a resurgent French national side. And he can't wait.

"There's going to be big crowd there, the atmosphere is going to be immense," Walmsley told the 5 Live Rugby League podcast.

"We're going into the lion's cage and we're going to get a hostile feeling. But these are the games you really want to play in."

  3. 'England forced France into bad spots'published at 12:52 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

    Jon Wilkin
Former England international on BBC Two

England couldn't make the most of it in the first 20-25 minutes.

They were building pressure and forcing France into bad spots that is why it felt so one-sided.

  4. 'England settled when they got the first try'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

    France 0-16 England

    Danika Priim
Former Leeds and England forward on BBC Two

There was a lack of composure at the start and some unusual and uncharacteristic errors from England.

France had good defence down the middle but England settled when they got the first try.

    That's the hooter.

England score three tries in 10 minutes to take control of this one.

France's right-edge are at sixes and sevens. If you wait and back off, Emily Rudge is just too good.

When you are stressed and lacking in numbers, you have to make a decision and land on some bodies.

    Emily Rudge (36 mins)

    England are in control now!

The visitors are stopped just short, but keep the ball alive and Emily Rudge spots a gap.

Rudge sells France's Melanie Bianchini with a feint to pass left before diving over the top of the defender to complete a smart score.

Jodie Cunningham with a little no-look pass on her inside, taking a French defender out of the game.

England move it left and might have numbers out there.

Paige Travis, con Tara Stanley (31 mins)

    And there's the second!

Paige Travis takes the pass in the centre of the field, around 25 metres out, and drives through a number of would-be tacklers on her way to the line, landing a big hand off to create some space and then bundling over the chalk to get the ball down.

It's a simple conversion for Tara Stanley.

The band has arrived. This one's now being played out to a jazzy backdrop... England are in party mood since that try too.

Emily Rudge supplied the pass to Amy Hardcastle and when that girl is running a that pace, she is so difficult to stop.

CONVERTED TRY - France 0-6 Englandpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 23 October 2021

Amy Hardcastle, con Tara Stanley (26 mins)

    England break the deadlock!

It's a great break down the left and Emily Rudge slips a smart pass out to Amy Hardcastle, who takes it well and gathers speed as she bursts through the French defence to touch down.

    Superb score.

Tara Stanley tags on the extras.

    France 0-0 England

Tara Stanley watches a high ball drop out of the sunny Perpignan sky and takes it well, it came after France's best set so far. That's the deepest the French have managed to get in the England half so far.

  15. Postpublished at 24 mins

    France 0-0 England

Loose pass from France and again they waste a good opportunity. Plenty of errors from the hosts today and it's meant they've been unable to build anything meaningful.

England make good ground in response before a kick to the corner from Beth Stott on the third tackle - think she was looking for a team-mate, but it wriggles into touch.

  16. Postpublished at 21 mins

    France 0-0 England

England are hoping to wear the French pack down. They also do a good job of turning the hosts with a kick that trickles over the French try-line and then follow up with a great chase to pin the opposition in.

The home crowd get excited as France look to move it quick in response but any threat is quickly snuffed out.

    France 0-0 England

France enjoy their best territory of the match so far, bulldozing their way into the England defence, but the visitors stand strong and Elisa Ciria's attempted kick is charged down.

Nothing wrong with the tackle, it was legal.

Tara Jones was looking to break forward but the door was firmly slammed shut.

  19. Postpublished at 15 mins

    France 0-0 England

Just over quarter of an hour in and despite England having the better territory, neither side have threatened the scoreboard. Both trying to impose themselves on the game at the moment and Tara Jones goes down under a huge hit from Leila Bessahli, she will need some treatment.

  20. Postpublished at 14 mins

    France 0-0 England

Good line from Gaelle Alvherne but she can't keep hold of it during the tackle and the ball pops forward.

England break and Beth Stott looks for a kick to the corner, only to overhit it by a fair way and the French defence watch thankfully as it drifts into touch.
