Rugby league gives, it also takes away. Heartbreak for Huddersfield who were minutes away from a memorable Challenge Cup win, ending a 69-year run without lifting the trophy.

It wasn't to be for Ian Watson's side who pushed Wigan to the limit.

The Warriors don't know when they're beaten and, under new coach Matty Peet, they look reinvigorated after last season.

A 20th title was won and the bumper Wigan attendance will be headed back up the M1 and M6 with gusto, I bet.

But this is where we leave you, I'm afraid. It's been a cracker hasn't it? If you've joined us today thank you, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  4. 'I feel for Huddersfield'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 28 May 2022

    FT: Huddersfield 14-16 Wigan

Wigan head coach Matt Peet told BBC Sport:

"I'm delighted we got the win - so many people have worked so hard.

"There's a massive turnout from the town, and the players are motivated by that.

"I actually feel for Huddersfield, they were the better team for large parts today. They're going to win things soon. They do things the right way and they've got a great owner.

"You could see the commitment on show from both teams. It was a moment at the end, and if I could have picked one player, it would have been Liam Marshall."

Dean: Commiserations to Huddersfield, they were fantastic today & I thought they where the better side tbh. Those players should be proud of their efforts today

Callum Thompson: A dramatic Challenge Cup Final that both teams contributed to. They're the team people love to hate but you have to credit Wigan, they usually find a way to win don't they? The sign of a quality side.

Neil McGuire: What a game the Challenge Cup Final was I’m by no means a Wigan fan but you have to be pleased for Matty Peet and coach who has served his time at the club and now gets a challenge cup winners medal as a head coach

James Whaling: A lesson in kicking your goals.

    FT: Huddersfield 14-16 Wigan

Huddersfield head coach Ian Watson told BBC Sport:

"I thought we were the better team. It's disappointing.

"I thought the effort was superb. Wigan are never going to go away, and they've picked us off at the end - small margins.

"This is the start for us, we can use this as fuel going forward."

  7. 'Absolutely heartbroken'published at 17:08 British Summer Time 28 May 2022

    FT: Huddersfield 14-16 Wigan

Huddersfield forward, and Lance Todd Trophy winner, Chris McQueen told BBC Sport:

"[I'm] so proud of the boys' efforts. Absolutely heartbroken. Our game-plan was to keep it simple - kick, chase, tackle.

"Little moments in games cost you. We're never going to point fingers - credit to Wigan, they got the job done in the end.

"It's been an amazing occasion, but nothing will make us feel better about the loss."

If those four missed kicks from Tui Lolohea go over, Huddersfield win the game. That's why they've lost.

You've got to feel for Ian Watson. Defeat with Salford in the final in 2020. Defeat with Huddersfield in the final in 2022.

And on both occasions, he coached a side that really went both barrels for the win.

Meanwhile, the post-match pyrotechnics have left the whole stadium smelling like 5 November again..

There's been some great finals and this is up there with them. It was magnificent.

Both teams contributed fully. But it was one piece of play for one man who clawed victory from the jaws of defeat.

Winning finals is about taking your opportunities. Huddersfield were surely going to win the game before that Marshall try. It's why we love this game.

    Liam Marshall

    Heartbreak for Huddersfield!

A clutch play if I've ever seen one, in any sport to be honest.

With two tackles left, Harry Smith sends a 20-metre fantastically-weighted grubber kick and Liam Marshall gets on the end of it in the corner to surely win Wigan their 20th Challenge Cup title.

Smith misses the extras, which I suppose gives the final few minutes an extra flavour..

They've got four minutes to make some sort of attack stick.

What have Wigan got left in the tank? We're getting into the final few minutes of this game and they need to make something happen and now.

Huddersfield (and honestly this wouldn't surprise me if it blew up in my face) look like they're holding firm.

    Huddersfield 14-12 Wigan

Wigan almost get caught out on their own try-line as Huddersfield look to pounce on a loose ball and go over to surely wrap this final up.

But in steps Jai Field who wins back possession and races to the wing and upfield and gets past halfway.

A sensational run. What a draining game this must be for both sides.

We aren't picking man of the match, but Oliver Russell has to be up there.

The kicking game, the communication, the leadership - he's been immense for Huddersfield.

Matty Peet looks cool and composed in the stands as he ponders how to overturn Huddersfield's narrow lead in these closing stages.

Meanwhile, Ian Watson is gesticulating on the touchline, urging his Huddersfield side on. Watto's wearing quite a fetching waistcoat for the occasion by the way eschewing the tracksuit get-up head coaches often opt for.
